What's illegal......... in my country we're allowed to make a copy for personal use, and you don't even have to own the original. But bypassing the encryption is illegal........... Who invents such a law............
We have to pay an extra fee for every blank cd and dvd (homecopytax), but it still stays illegal............. You have to be politician to understand it.

You buy that favorite DVD off the shelf. You shelve it after watching it once and don't pull it off the shelf until 5 years later. You discover that many of your 5 year old DVD's and CD's suffer from Bit Rot. Yes, the data has decayed to a stage where you no longer can enjoy the complete movie without skipping past the affected area's of your media. You then try to learn how to duplicate your licensed goods only to discover that the media and your hardware has been copy protected or some type of restraint put in place so you no longer can retain a working digital copy. You then wonder why you went and purchased the DVD if you only watch it a couple times and then you are left with going out and buying another copy. Then after downloadding a copy of the movie you already own, you discover that you no longer had to sit through time wasting advertisements and DCMCA/FBI warning screens to get to watching your favorite movie. But Alas, you broke the law (Which was written by those who were bribed and financed by the very industry who distributes the media). Did you know that Magnetic tape lasts longer than DVD's and CD's? Ever wonder what happened to those technologies?
My opinion is that time given, those in the industries will learn of all these ways consumers bypass these copy constraints and then pursue legal actions against them. Wherever the laws do not pertain to the situation, they will lobby government to pressure other governments to comply with thier almighty idea of what is lawfull. If that doesn't work, they will continue sending threats and hate mail to those they identify who break the law. Even when the software has a legitimate use, it will still be scrutinized by those who want to apply control onto consumers.
Meanwhile the consumer turns a blind eye, but after all, they endorsed the industry who created these rules, so why should things be any different? (Buy what you like? - Nah, lets all buy whatever garbage they feed us..) I am speaking about a country who already is trying to influence the entire world with thier ideology. You may even be paying levies on that data storage meda or device which goes towards these people too! So I guess you can pay for not being able to copy thier stuff by making your own stuff. So afterall, they should encourage the use of writing DVD's, should they not?
Am I wrong?
Actually, it would be frowned upon having to discuss it here. After-all, we wouldn't want Digital Video Forums to be threatened by these individuals for questioning the very idea, would we?Last edited by Livewire; 14 Oct 2005, 03:45 AM.Government throws more money at a problem, so it looks like they are making a difference.Comment

There's no need to stop DVD Shrink - he stopped it himself. I guess the authorities could try and take it off every mirror everywhere, but it would find its way onto a mirror in a country where the DMCA couldn't touch.
In fact, the official site went down a month back due to the host being told that it was illegal software (more or less). Within 2 days the site was back up and running in a "nicer" country.

Illegal?
I think BlockBuster is aware and is charging the amount to make up for what they think would cover there lost. 25 dollars a month for unlimited rentals... I dont have awhole lot of times to make it worth the price in watching all the movies I can. So they are making a killing because I know this and still am paying that amount. So to each his own.Comment

@Chetwood
If you read his post carefully, I don't believe Hoss33 ever said he was doing anything other than renting movies from BB.
