they could probably never have taken anybody to court for doing this anyway, unless they were making some sort of profit. my archives are for mine/my family's use only, they don't leave the house.

is it still seen as "illegal" in the US?

i've never heard of recording a t.v show as being illegal. that would make anyone who bought a vcr or dvd recorder a criminal. bloody ridiculous.

It was quietly made legal some years back without any embarassing
publicity. Everybody was already doing it.

Never knew it was illegal to begin with. I tape stuff all the time. And, to my advantage, when movies (that I do not own) are on TV, I tape them, since it's legal Basically like getting movies for free (well except for the cable bill) - And I do not mean pay per view channels - I mean when they show movies on Fox or NBC or something.

i can't do that anymore--and won't. i threw all my old tv movies on vhs in the bush where they belong a long time ago. tv movies are filled to the max with bloody commercials, edited for tv, time-compressed and most in full screen (which i hate more than anything). i won't even watch a movie on tv unless it's a made for tv movie. you aren't going to see the real thing. recently i caught a few minutes of casino 1995 and it was butchered so bad you had to wonder why they would bother with this.

has anyone seen national lampoon's christmas vacation on tv? last year i saw a bit and the movie is ruined! not that funny at all! meanwhile at 10 they got sopranos on and swearing to the max. the ultimate worst cable station IMO is TBS superstation (altanta). i remember a couple years ago i was watching tremors 1990, and there is a scene when val and earl see the big worm after it crashes in the cement wall, earl says in the unedited version "that's one big mother!" (nothing wrong with that right?) but tbs must be run by the amish i swear, they changed it to "that's one big monster!". it truly gets me so mad that i just try to buy all these things so i don't have to pull my hair out

Thankfully, the Aussie cable channels don't edit out the norty bits. They tend to adhere reasonably closely to the code of practice wrt time they show the movies and so we see the whole flick.

However, and this is why I will never record off the TV, they do not send the flick down the pipe as it is on a DVD. We see mostly P&S versions blown up articfically to 16:9 or worse 4:3. 5.1 channel is non-existent except on new releases on the paid channels and when those same movies get to the free channels, they've lost the surround sound.

It ain't worth it.

PS. Looie - Amish people, AFAIK, have mothers, some of whom, are "big".

Well, I hate 4:3, but as far as changing movies go, most of the movies I watch are fine (I am not really old enough to watch R-rated movies, and my parents do not let me), so I do not notice a difference. Unless copying DVDs from rental stores becomes legal, I think I will stick with getting the TV movies for free. As far as 5.1 surround goes, I do not have a surround channel, so who cares?

Well, all I have is a TV with the 2 speakers that are in the TV. So it doesn't affect me one way or the other. So thus, for me, taping movies off TV is a good way to get them for free. For others that are picky about surround sound, oh well! I mean, how else can you get a movie for free? The library here loans them for free, but only for a week - they are free off the TV.

Almost everyone I know (including young adults still living at home) have some type of "Surround Sound" system. Even my grandpa who's 85 has a awesome Sony surround sound unit and my niece who's 5 has a basic surround sound system.

Well I don't. And about the commercials, yes, I tape them, but when converting to a DVD with my video capture card, I remove them.
