As to the cause of astigmatism:it is a structural defect of the eyeball where the front surface(usually the cornea)is NOT exactly spherical e.g the horizontal curvature may be more/less than the vertical curvature. This causes inequal refraction of light at the cornea and a perfect image cannot b formed on the retina. However astigmatism can also b caused in older ages due to lental changes like cataract.
So when I said 20/13 originally, I was correct.

        .
20/13 means u can see at 20 feet what a normal person can see at 13 feet.It implies u have SUPER NORMAL vision? Do u? Why then will u need glasses?

I used to have 20/13. I developed an astigmatism and right now I can only see at 20/20. Apparently with my glasses it is correctable to 20/10.

Wow I am confused here. All I know is that my vision REALLY sucks, I can't even read the words on a computer screen without my glasses, or even a book in front of me! I am just really nearsighted. Dunno why, but my vision keeps getting worse.

Hey, Paglamon, whats your op on laser surgery my eyesight is crap without glasses something like 20/200 and I have astigmatism in my left eye. Im like 20/20 with glasses.

Right eye is worse than left but left vision sucks from the astig.

hole in retina in right eye out of vision range.

had 2 checks for laser surgery both docs said i'd be 20/20 afterwards, but im scared of the surgery as a friend had complications (forget what exactly some kind of infection) but is fine now

With my glasses on, I can see at 20 feet that which a "normal" person needs to be at 10 feet to see. If some one is 20/200, that means that they see things at 20 feet like a "normal" person would see at 200 feet.

Yes I know that. But the thing about you having 13/20 or 20/13... wow.

I never got mine tested, but I just know that my vision is horrible.

Yeah, I remember when I was a kid, my doctor telling me that I should be a pilot because of my vision.

Laser surgery on cornea(LASIK) for correction of refractive error is pretty safe.Commonest complication is some form of glare effect which wears away with time. However I personally DO NOT advise this if patient is happy with specs or Contact lens. But contact lens r not very helpful(toric lens r quite problematic)
                      in high degree of astigmatism.

@TNT,u seemed to have been a child prodigy with that sort of a vision!!!!Very rare to have 20/13.Even now ,with ur glasses u have super normal vision.

@drf,try to do ur near work(reading, writing etc.)from as far as u possibly can.Try to relax ur eyes by looking at faraway objects(with ur glasses on) after prolonged periods of near work.Ur myopia is expected to stop increasing around the age of 18-20.Get ur eyes checked atleast once a year .Always have ur glasses on.

                          Thanks, Paglamon for your input

I cant stand wearing contacts, I dont mind glasses but I love sports and glasses drive me crazy when i get a drop of sweat on em.

I'm prolly going to get the LASIK sometime this year as I am just sick of glasses with sports.

I got another ? for you how come when I squint I can see sooo much better

I don't think u r squinting to see better.U r probably narrowing ur eyes.It helps in 2 ways.Firstly it gives u a pin hole effect(try to see anything thro a pinhole;it looks so much clearer).Secondly it is naturally trying to overcome ur astigmatism.

I always wear my glasses except when sleeping. I can see fine with my glasses on, but somehow my vision gets worse as I get older... but I think my dad's was like that too. I used to be able to read without my glasses and now it looks odd and makes my eyes hurt unless I keep them on.
