Please don't rip me a new one if I ask the wrong question. I am only curious. Of cource movie downloading is illegal, thou some sites say it is legal, but do you get full length movies, or just bits and pieces of movies. Also, can you get brand new movies like the ones in theaters. What format are the movies in, mpeg-2 or what, what about the quality? I thank you for your information.

Just like with music you will see video being sold legally over broadband.
Looking at the technical limitations, and taking a best case scenario of
1MB/s(super high speed broadband) and a divx format of 2,000MB, that
a little over an hour. On the other end of the spectrum let's try reducing the bandwidth by 8(my connection), and have 5-6 GB of mpeg2. That's a whole day! I'll pass! -
I have a freind that downloads tv shows that she misses. I guess she pays like $5.00 per episoad and the only one you can download are the ones that are more then 2 weeks old and already shown on tv.
The quality sucks though. but if you really want to see a tv show that you missed and you dont mine the poor quality then I guess go for it.
I would never pay for them eventually they come out on DVD and I would never bother with a movie. for the leagaul downloads they cost to much for the time they take and the quality they are in better off just buying the DVD.Comment

I thought it was legal to download TV-ripped episodes from Torrents or otherwise? Otherwise I was misinformed.CYA Later:

he's talking about tv captures, which last time i checked were perfectly ok to discuss here and not illegal."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". Jack The Ripper - 1888

lets say somebody downloads an episode of "friends". all friends episodes are on DVD and available for purchase. the person who downloads it is not paying for it, neither is he/she watching the ads that screen when it is free, on TV. that may be ok to discuss on these forums, but its most certainly not legal.
even capturing with a PVR, DVR, VCR or capture card is questionable. technically illegal in most places around the world, but nobody to enforce it. if you were to record or capture said episode of friends and keep for personal use, thats one thing, but to distribute is another.
i am by no means an expert on this topic, just voicing what i have learned from various articles i have read on this matterLast edited by futurex; 20 Mar 2006, 12:28 PM.Futurex

LT Columbo, I mean download, not capture myself. BUT, I use this IRC channel that says "if you can buy the episode, you can't get it here", to stay legal. Most of those have WB logos or whatever they were recorded from. Is that legal? Basically someone capturing from their TV and serving on the Internet.
It's great cuz I don't have a TiVo so if I miss something I can just download that episode. If it is illegal, let me know, but they are NOT DVD rips so I don't see why they would be.CYA Later:

read this about time shifting and tv capture, it spells out the finer nuances of
copyright infringement.
The District Court concluded that noncommercial home use recording of material broadcast over the
public airwaves was a fair use of copyrighted works and did not constitute copyright infringement. It
emphasized the fact that the material was broadcast free to the public at large, the noncommercial
character of the use, and the private character of the activity conducted entirely within the home.
Moreover, the court found that the purpose of this use served the public interest in increasing access to
television programming, an interest that "is consistent with the First Amendment policy of providing the
fullest possible access to information through the public airwaves.Comment

drf i know you meant downloading tv captures. it is true i'm no expert about the true legality specifics of this stuff and frankly i don't give a hoot except for the laws of this forum. last time this came up the powers that be had no qualms about captures. i can't see how anyone can feel these are illegal material your capture or not."One day men will look back and say I gave birth to the 20th Century". remember nothing in this world is free. we want it on dvd, we buy it. we want it on tv, we watch ads for products we buy. torrents are free of ads and we sure as hell dont pay for them. i dont think the studios or distributors or whatever dont agree with giving their millions away like that, but havent done anything too drastic cause its not worth their time and money to crack down individuals doing it. if said individuals were all gathered in a large warehouse-like area at a given time, i think they will take action. i dunno about everybody else, but i see a difference between something you captured yourself for personal use, like i do, and downloading an entire series of episodes that are on dvd, or havent aired in your country, or even ones you missed
as the wookie said, its a grey area though. i may not be able to tell you with 100% confidence what is legal, but its much much easier to tell you what isn'tLast edited by futurex; 20 Mar 2006, 02:08 PM.Futurex
