    What does DVD Stand for?

I always though DVD = Digital Video Disc.

I found out I was wrong, just wonder how many others think that DVD stands for digital video disc.

If you ask 100 people what DVD stands for most will say Digital Video Disc.
It actually stands for Digital Versatile Disc. DVD is commonly associated
with video, but the truth is a DVD can hold music, text, photos and all
    forms of digital media.

Googled Digital Versatile Disc and found this. If this is correct then no one is right or wrong.

[1.1.1] What do the letters DVD stand for?
All of the following have been proposed as the words behind the letters DVD.

Delayed, very delayed (referring to the many late releases of DVD formats)
Diversified, very diversified (referring to the proliferation of recordable formats and other spinoffs)
Digital venereal disease (referring to piracy and copying of DVDs)
Dead, very dead (from naysayers who predicted DVD would never take off)
Digital video disc (the original meaning proposed by some of DVD's creators)
Digital versatile disc (a meaning later proposed by some of DVD's creators)
      Nothing
And the official answer is? "Nothing." The original acronym came from "digital video disc." Some members of the DVD Forum (see 6.1) tried to express that DVD goes far beyond video by retrofitting the painfully contorted phrase "digital versatile disc," but this has never been officially accepted by the DVD Forum as a whole. The DVD Forum decreed in 1999 that DVD, as an international standard, is simply three letters. After all, how many people ask what VHS stands for? (Guess what, no one agrees on that one either.)
Blessed are they who expect nothing, for they shall not be disappointed!

It is DVD Versatile Disc. It also known as DVD Video so, Digital Video Disc Video sounds odd.

Officially, VHS has always been Video Home System which JVC came up with as they invented it. It was called Vertical Helical Scan in the early days but that changed to Video Home System.

I think it is now just "DVD" with no acronym.

                  But I voted Versatile.

I wonder if blu ray will be blue? Will blutach go for bluray?

I remember discovering it was "Digital Versatile Disc" when I first was researching how to backup DVD's.

i have computer textbooks from late nineties refering to dvd's as digital video discs and/ or digital video discs rom. Logically i can see how the definition has changed as the discs are more versatile. I always thought it was digital video disc, but it makes so much sense now that i think about it.
                        Learn something everyday i guess.

Off the subject, but can you use a DVD-RW to back up data in spreadsheets or word processing programs? Or are they strictly for video, hence the V in DVD?

That's why the "V" stands for Versatile, not Video. You can use a DVD for so much more then just Video.

Then why wasn't I able to back up data with one? The PC recognizes the drive as a DVD/CD burner, but it wouldn't let me burn it. I have a vast amount of info I need to back up.
