My back was too messed up for the military though I was a machnists for the country's biggest helicopter company (Sikorsky's) for 9 years. My brother served on the USS Mt. Whitney, though (and also served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, including the Tet Offensive!!) The USS Kitty Hawk, America's pride at sea!! She's a beauty, alive and kicking.
Messed up for the military ...me too. I got a medical discharge outta Army boot camp in June '68. I worked at the Navy Yard in Philly, did a Marine Machinist Apprenticeship. I worked on the Mt. Whitney also and rode her back from Hamburg, Germany to do some testing in the early '80s when she was coming to Philly for an overhaul. All the time I spent on the ships as a civilian working for Uncle Sam, but I mighta spent more time at sea from '67 to '95 than a buncha sailors did in a 4 year hitch.
I did most off my sailing in Long Island Sound. A lot of lake sailing (does that count?) I flew small planes for a few years but I had a spinal nerve stimulator that is connected to the base of my skull for pain management that I was concerned would affect my medical status for my flight medical so I let it go. I'am am 48 but I feel like I'm 70, so you whippersnappers better respect you elders, dagnabit!! My brother had his leg nearly blow off during the TET and the marine corps sent a marine is dress blues who mistakenly notified my mother that my brother was killed. I was around 9 years old (I answered the door), I grabbed the telegram and said "Mom, he's wounded, not dead". I thought she was going yo kill that marine but he was crying too, I think he assumed the worse, so to me Vietnam sucked. My brother has a great affinity for the Vietnam people. He is one of their great supporters.
