My first backup was Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring TC. It was with Shrink 1.02 in June 2003. I recorded it on a Philips DVD+RW as a test and I am still using the same exact disc. I was truly amazed by the results.
The first +R's I bought myself was a spindle of 25 Datawrite 2.4x which cost me £35 at the time on 16th June 2003. They have RICOHJPNR00 dye and all 25 still play perfect. They are also still free of scratches and fingerprints. The first film I backed up was The Transporter (has been labelled) on the day I got the discs then Bulletproof Monk (not labelled). I have been buying Ridisc Ritek -R's 4x (G04 dye) after I finished the +R's. I am still buying G04's although I can't get Ridiscs anymore. I now use white top G04's and have a few Ridiscs left.
I have never had a single coaster in all my burning and no DVD has turned bad. I have never ever bought CMC or other crappy discs.
I can't do PI error tests with my burners but here is a CRC test of The Transporter.

Mine was Pitch Black, cant remember the exact date but it was a few years ago!! I actually burnt it with Record Now as I didnt know any better in those days. I reburnt it later on better quality printable media but I will track down the original disc and see if it still plays.Jack

I didnt think I could have done it then, I must have bought it later. I dont think I had a DVD burner back in those days. Knowing me I probably got it from the bargain bin a couple of years later, I am a tightwod!Jack

If anyone used Shrink. It can't be before April 2003 as that is when the first version came out. It didn't have burning capability with Nero at that time. So, it was done manually.Comment

No there wasn't.
There was a bug in the building of the files with 1.02 that caused a glitch in the picture (still have a DVD with it). Some person created a fix that sorted out the files before they were burned. The fix was then put into Shrink 1.03. The next version was version 2.0, then 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. Then, 3.0, 3.1 and then 3.2.
There was a secret 1.04 that never go to the public. Only a few people got that to beta test. It was dumped and improved to become version 2.0.
DVD players came out in 1996 in Japan with US and Europe being late 1997.
DVD-R's came out in 1997. The first drive cost $17,000 in 1997 and then down to $5,000 in 1999. It was not until 2001 that they got more popular. The drives were still £1000 at the time and the only good one was a Pioneer . I saw them for £900 and I remember seeing blank discs at £25 each.
DVD+R and DVD+RW came out late 2001 but the idea for DVD+ was back in 1997.
I got into burning in 2003 and burners were still £200 for a DVD+ 2.4x only drive. It was a Ricoh MP125A. Blank recordable discs were around £1.50 each and DVD+RW discs were £5 each.Last edited by nwg; 24 Oct 2006, 07:19 AM.Comment
