Divx to dvd-r

Trying to convert.. Have used many guides off many sites and it never works.. I'm sure I an missing something somewhere. Does anybody have a location of an all inclusive giude for the complete divx/dvd newbie..

also looking for the book dvd demystified if anybody can help out there.

I want to...

Go from divx to mpeg 2 I guess or maybe mpeg 1. I have not tried mpeg 1 yet.

My goal is to burn this divx stuff to a dvd-r in some way that it will be watchable on my dvd player. I tried one larger file (a mistake) a couple of times but I keep getting muxing errors. That was using virtual dub and tmpeg I believe it is called. I must be messing something up. I have tried several guides and failed each time.
I don't really know if I'm missing a codec or if I'm just setting something wrong but nothing is working. I though video editing was a pain
I will try a smaller file this time so it does not take forever but still would like to reference maybe a diff. guide just in case.
I installed the latest Nimo pack on my system so I thought I would be alright with codecs but like I said I'm at a wall with my limited DVD knowledge.
