When I encode VCD into DivX, should I increase the resolution

or stick with the original 240x320? Does it make any sense to resize it?

Keep it at the original resolution. Lowering the (already low) resolution to an even lower resolution is not a good idea. Increasing the resolution does nothing to increase the quality, and can instead decrease compressibility.

however, if the res was 352*288 then it would be a different story. how? well, I tested it, and always use this process/technique for the past 4-5 years now.

Take that video file, encode it in MPEG2 (using DVD settings, but change the RES only to 352*288 and the audio to 44100Hz)

Encode

Then take that video and encode it to 640*480. Then take this video and encode to 352*288 and then to DIVX

Now, u don't lose quality, hell no (not much anyway) u increase the brightness a tad and it should work....

I agree that it might be so, but...

...when I compare the results (watching it full screen), I can see that the picture looks lousy (I can see big pixels) if I did not change the resolution. If I resize it to a bigger resolution, the picture looks better (no noticeable pixels). Now, what's wrong with my eyes?

increasing an already inferior resolution (compared to other formats) to a bigger one, shouldnt lead to visibly better results.

thus the questions, what might be worng with you eyes should be answered by an optician
(no offence meant, ironmine)

maybe smoothing is the key!?

why dont you try to leave the resolution as it comes and use a smoothing/noise filter when converting to divx?
