extreme file size on a mpg

    Hi there,

I am using TMPGenc to convert AVI files to MPG. I use all default settings found in the Video CD (NTSC).mcf file. I have used this plenty of times before without problems and burned quite good VCD's using NERO.

Yesterday I encountered a problem that I haven't seen before...any help greatly appreciated. (I am quite a novice user of TMPGenc and encoding/decoding)

TMPGenc stopped encoding to MPG yesterday at 28% encoding, because my hard drive was full. I started the job with almost 2.5GB free space. Normally my converted MPG files are 1.5GB in file size.

At 28% done, my MPG file had reached a file size of 2.4GB.

Why is the file size becoming so big ?

The AVI file I am trying to convert I downloaded off a friend. In the filename he has named the file "(streamload)" Does this have something to do with it ?

Anyone with any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

"The AVI file I am trying to convert I downloaded off a friend."

I would suggest that before you try to figure out why you're having this problem, with this particular file, that you once again attempt to use TMPGEnc to convert a file that you've previously successfully converted. If it converts to a normal filesize, you'll have then isolated the problem to your friend's file. If the same problem is exhibited with a "known good" file, then you can start considering problems with TMPGEnc itself.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

        Your advice was correct

The problem is not with TMPGenc as you presumed. I tried a different file and that went remarkably well.

So the problem must be related to the file I am trying to convert. How does an DivX AVI file differ from another AVI file while their initial sizes are the same ?

How would you advice me further on with this file ?

        Your help is much appreciated.

"How does an DivX AVI file differ from another AVI file while their initial sizes are the same ?"

          Different DivX codecs used
          Different degrees of video compression
Different format, bitrates of audio compression
          Different video dimensions
          Different video framerates
With or without black top and bottom borders
          Different color depth
          Different conversion software
Probably a couple of more things that I haven't thought of at the moment...

            hm..

Wow, what a list of things . . . I guess I'll try to check for deviances in all the things you have listed here, and I guess this probably is pretty good start to get to know the product and it's possibilities more . . .

If you happen to remember the few things that you didn't think of at the moment you were writing the post, please keep them comming . . .

            Thanks so faar.
