Gordian Knot and DivX 1st pass, 2nd pass

what is the whole point with 1st and 2nd passes...

what does using both passes do for encoding my avi? better quality?

what would be the effect of only using one of the passes... say 1st only, or 2nd only...?

im asking this because using both passes takes far too long to encode a movie.

1st pass analyzes, 2nd pass creates the file based on the data from pass1

thus bitrate diestribution is MUCH better using 2 passes.

in terms of quality i'd never ever go for 1/single pass no matter how much faster that might be
