Best method of encoding DV video from camcorder to DivX

I'm going crazy trying to convert my DV video from my digital camcorder (Sony TRV22) to DiVX. I'm not sure if the problem is the interlacing or the grain/noise of the camcorder image, but the encoded DivX quality is pretty bad. I tried the Smart Deinterlacer filter with VirtualDub and that helps a bit, but I'm not sure if I should be deinterlacing my video.

I've read several posts here in the forum and I'm curious if there is a "best method" to use to encode DV -> DiVX?

I lookd it up but it's not available for VirtualDub.

Any other suggestions? I really can't believe someone hasn't written a guide for this. It seems like a very common thing to do.
