Blank/Black Preview are in Virtual Dub and AviEdit

For some reason I see no preview in VirtualDub AND Aviedit on about 90% of the divX files i have, while a few of them do display a preview picture.

When I try to recompress these files, it outputs a file with sound but no video - except if i use direct stream copy, then it gives a normal/proper file.

What could be the cause of this?

well since the files are playing, I presume the necessary codecs are installed?

not necessarily so

keep in mind that divx5 for example plays divx4 and 3 but that does not mean, vd will be using divx5 to edit divx3 movies. properly!

UncasMS - thanks for the help. I installed divX 3 codec from the nimo codec pack - now all works just fine. Am i presumptious in thinking that divx5 is better than versions 4 and 3 in all encoding situations?
