Subtitles 2 Divx (.avi) and then burn both

I have the *.avi file of the movie and also its english subtitle file *.sub.
My question is how do I "put" the subtitles into the movie so that when I burn the movie I get to see the movie with the subtitles.
I have Nandub( latest version).
Please do tell me the steps involved as though I am a layman.

the format SUB can be loaded as optional subtitle by some players/filters.

BSPlayer for example will simply let you load your subtitle file with CTRL+L

this way you will not have to take all the trouble of re-encoding your original avi file and more important: lowering quality (because of the re-encoding)!
