software to downsample to 44.1kHz on the fly?

i'm relatively experienced with video, but not much audio experience.

when i play movies that are at 48000 Hz, i get a weird crackling/popping noise throughout. someone suggested that my audio system (gateway laptop, preinstalled ess es1988 allegro pci audio) may be only 44100 Hz, and thus be downsampling and producing the noise.

are there any players than can do this downsampling on the fly more smoothly and spare me the noise? is there any audio software workaround other than re-encoding the movie, or buying a real soundcard?

    thanks for your help!

Media Player Classic can just go to View>Options>Filters>Audio Switcher and click on Down-sample to 44100 Hz

      Wow. That'd be sweet!

Do you know if that filter has to be installed?

I am in WMP6.4.09.1128 (mplayer2.exe) and my Options are only

      Playback
      Player
      Custom Views
      Advanced
      Formats

Advanced only has Streaming Media options, but it does seem like there is room for more, maybe if I installed something.

Nevermind, i downloaded the latest Classic (6.4.7.6) and it's as you say.

        Thanks so much!!

I took me about 6 different forums and 18 attempted workarounds/downloads, and it was all so simple!
