no audio no video

I have been trying to figure out why i cant play movies and have come up wtih no help. I am hoping that some one can help me. When I play a movie in any program on my computer the screen just stays blank and the time starts to run. There is also no audio. I downloaded gspots and have ranthe movie files through it. I have all of the correct codecs to play a specific movie but then when i hit the render button it starts but never finishes. Any ideas? As you can telli dont know much about computers but am trying. Thanks!

yeahi have read everything and stil cant figure it out. I fonally got the movie to render through gspot but stilli h ave no video or audio but the time moves.
