Breaking encryption - own the movie or not - is illegal
I'm jumping in here w/o too much backround, as I haven't seen the original post - where's it at?
But that's besides the point - neither here nor there. I keep reading this distiction bet. backing up a DVD you own vs. backing one up you don't - legally, what's the difference? - are we talking degrees of illegal or are both equally as illegal? Or, is this a uniquely American problem, and you Swedes, Brits, Kenyans, people who live in Monico whatever they're called (what are they called?), - whomever - are allowed to break encryption.?
If that's the case, go to town! I'll have to bring a box or two to Cannes in January (MIDEM) to backup all my DVDsLast edited by loopyloops; 24 Dec 2005, 03:45 PM.Comment

Boy, your geography is all over the place. Cannes is in France, which admittedly borders Monaco (you access Monaco by air by travelling to Nice on the Cote d'Azur).
We do not give advice regarding the law. If you want to read the DMCA you can - section 1201 is relevant. An interesting analysis (which we don't claim to be legally correct) is set out here.
However, from what I read on the forums, the Dutch may rent a DVD and copy it. This certainly appears prohibited in the USA.
Many people regard any copying of a DVD as illegal - fair use rights or no. Others claim fair use allows the copying of a DVD you have purchased. It is up to the US courts to decide - one day they will.
