Not being able to play new dvd's

First off I just want to say hi to all being that I am new here. I ran across this site and thought I would join in.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
    <o></o>
Anyway, I figured I could start with the rant that made me decide to join here.<o></o>
    <o></o>
I have $6000.00+ of Denon theater system and invested in it thinking that it would last me a good long time; but in recent months I have been experiencing problems with the new dvd movies coming out.
    <o> </o>
I figured a $1200 dvd player would play anything, and it does; but now the new encryption on dvds has it telling me “This type of disc can not be played in this player.”
    <o> </o>
    Very annoying!
    <o> </o>
So now I am either forced to spend another $1500.00 on an equivalent player from Denon (no guarantee that it will not run into the same issues), rip my newer dvds just so I can watch them, or have 50 dang dvd’s players to play dvd,s on.
    <o> </o>
I have contacted many of the companies (not mentioning names) responsible for the publishing of these dvds and every one of them has told me to purchase a specific brand and model of dvd player to play the dvd in question; each company told me a different player.
    <o> </o>
But that still does not guarantee that every one of my dvds will play on them.
    <o> </o>
Example: I took several of the dvds that I could not play on my Denon to several stores looking at the brands and models I was told to buy by these companies.
    <o> </o>
I found that every one of them would play some of the dvds, but not all of them; they had similar if not the same problems as my Denon.
    <o> </o>
So this leaves it at having one heck of a rack of just dvd players and assigning dvds to each player just to be able to watch all of the dvds I own and plan to own.
    <o> </o>
Sounds like a nightmare of wiring and a major fire hazard.
    <o> </o>
OR just hoping that there will always be a way for me to rip the dvds so I can play them in the investment I already made.
    <o> </o>
How the heck are these companies getting away with putting encryption on their dvds that not only is intended to prevent copying but even prevents people from playing the dang things. And besides, how can they get away with telling me that I need to purchase a specific brand and model of dvd player to play their dvds.
    <o> </o>
Isn’t that a violation of consumer rights? I should have the right to choose what brand and model dvd player I buy and should have the right to play the dvds that I purchase from the stores in that player.
    <o> </o>
So for now I am purchasing dvds and when it does not play in my denon, I make a copy that will play in it. I am not going to invest bookoos of $$$ and take up my entire living room with a rack of every dvd play they told me to buy. I bought the dvd and gosh dang it if I’m going to watch it.
    <o> </o>
    Anyway, hi all, again.<o></o>

Well the good thing is that you could buy 9 DVD players for the price of your $1200 DVD player and they would all be better. Get one that Upscales the Image so you can enjoy the DVD's at 720P or 1080I. I don't believe the Sony upscales. The Zenith DVB 318 does and they can be had cheap. They also have the Faroudja chip inside.

          @YCIGAFSN,

I feel your pain! I had the same thing happen to me I bought a dvd that wont play in my $800.00 player either. Granted the prices have come down since I bought my player but an equvilant to the one I have now would cost about $450.00 or so.

Which all of that is besides the point whether you pay $20.00 or $2,000 for a player it should be able to play ALL dvd's.

They are getting so carried away with the copyright encryptions that not ALL DVD's will play on all players.

And when you do pay the big money to buy the better players you shouldnt have to buy a new one every time they come out with some new insane encryptions.

The only way i could watch the one I bought with the crazy encrption was to back it up.

It seems this will only get worse as time goes by and eventually we will either have to buy a new player every month or we will have to back them up just to be able to watch them.

I back all mine up to watch them in any case, a ~$21.00 scratched DVD doesn't even make a good coaster for drinks with that hole in it As long as the backup programs keep pace with the protection we'll be ok.
But then there is the new media coming up, BR etc. which I won't buy until a movie that I really hafta have is out and only on it.
With a standalone DVD recorder with a MV hack if they can be played they can be put on DVD also if it is on a PPV or cable TV channel
