Error converting AVI files with TMPGencode

Dear All,

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if my question has been put to you before today. I am using TMPGencode to convert files to MPG2 for writing onto a DVD. There are some .AVI files or Video Clip(movies) that the encoder will not convert, as soon as I choose the file using the browser option it display the following message This file can't open or unsupported. The Properties tab indicates that this files are:
VIDEO=DIVXMPG4 V3, AUDIO=MPEG Layer-3
I have installed the Nimo codes.
Could someone please indicate to me how can I convert these files,

The audiostream is undoubtedly in Variable Bitrate (VBR) .MP3 format - which TMPGEnc will not process. You'll have to do the following in order to convert the audiostream to an acceptable format:

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio

Simply use NanDub (or VirtualDubMod) to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Load your original .AVI into NanDub
Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" - and choose "No compression(PCM)"
From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
Then set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVI (set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file).

Open TMPGEnc and FIRST load the silent .AVI - SECOND, load the .WAV audiostream.

Dear Setarip,

I finally found and loaded the NanDub program. As I loaded the movie file it shows an error saying:
"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "DX50" (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Any ideas as to where I can get the proper codecs?

Dear Setarip,

I Uninstalled the Nimo codecs, downloaded and installed the Tsunami package and TMPGEncode took like duck to the water.

The only slight problem was XP it kept saying you are installing non compliant codecs you may have problem any way I carried on regardless and it is encoding the AVI file to MPG2, but it will take 33 hrs to complete.

Is there any way in shortening this time?. I set the Motion Search precision to: Hihgest quality (very slow). Is it worth it or should I set it for a fastest setting?

Try setting it to "Normal". I've not been able to see any benefit in using "highest quality". All it seems to do is require A LOT of extra time to process...

Good Morning Setarip,

I left it running overnight and this morning at 7.00 AMwhen I chechked it had finished the processing. It only took about 9 hrs I could not really tell because the TMPGEncode program closed itself. Hummm.
I have not had time to checke it throughly as I had to go to work for what I saw it has done just under an hour and maybe cut short the end. I will check it tonight,

Good Morning Setarip,

Yesterday evening I looked at the film where it ended and it is about 45 minutes short of the ending on the original film.

I checked the original film to see if there was a glitch on the film but there was nothing smooth as a peach.

So once again I started encoding this time I left the Motion Search precision on the default encode setting. It showed that it would take 30hrs to encode so I left it running overnight and this morning at 7.00 AM when I checked the PC it had finished the processing at the same point as before 56 minutes 18 seconds. There was no error message and the TMPGEncode program again had closed itself up.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this to happen?

Despite the fact that the .AVI plays back properly under a particular player, it still may contain bad frames.

1) Load the original .AVI file into the most recent version of either VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod

2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copy"

3) Select "Check for errors"

4) Select "Mask bad frames"

5) Save with a new filename

I am using VirtualDubMod version 1.5.4.1

There is no Audio tab on the program

3) Select "Check for errors" -Select "Mask bad frames"

I am able to select check errors but the option to select "Mask bad frames" is grayed out.

Could it be that the program is beta or faulty?, any ideas where I could get a copy of the working program?

After you've scanned for errors, the "Mask bad frames" option will become available...

First that all thank you very much for your Help.

Over on my last message I wrote:

It was the program. I deleted all previous programs that I had downloaded and started again. Downloaded NanDub and VirtualDub. This time it had all the bits in the right places. Hooked the films to it and allowed me to clean the bad frames. After which I used TMPGEncode to convert them onto MPG2 without any trouble.

Next Question how can I transform a .DAT file back into an AVI or MPG movie?.
I used VirtualDub to do it but the only problem is that it produced a 23GB file and my HD run out of memory before it finished it.

Any Ideas?, thank you and
