Error converting AVI files with TMPGencode

When using VirtualDub to convert the file to .AVI, you have to select a video codec for compression ("Video" dropdown menu, click on "Compression"), because VirtualDub's default setting, which you've unknowingly used, is for UNCOMPRESSED RGB...

I managed to convert back the .DAT file I choose the Indeo codec to compress the file. In your own opinion which will be the best codec to use to compress?

Certainly not the Indeo series. I'd suggest you try either the 3IVX codec or one of the DivX codecs, which will generate a smaller file (with good quality)...

a divx file can be burnt directly to a dvd.

note that dvd only means digital versatile disk..... no matter
what it contains. if the burning software is set to iso data mode
the resulting dvd will just behave like a very big data cd.

these disks of course will only be playable on special dvd standalones that can display mpeg4 videos.

if you want to create a MOVIE dvd out of an avifile you have to reencode to mpeg2.

as I reread your posts i noticed that one question remained unanswered.

to convert a *.dat file, that was created for dvd use,
back to mpeg just copy it from your dvd/ or dvdready folder and rename it to *.mpg

note that the mpeg file now carries a dvd compliant header...
