    DVD Backup Proposal

    Fellow Forum Members:

I've got a suggestion. It appears to me that there is a significant gap in DVD knowledge amongst the members of this forum. There are the "Lightning UK's" amongst the crowd who are obviously well versed in DVD technology, ripping, encoding, and it's general data manipulation.........And then there are the newbies.......totally clueless users who don't know the first thing about the DVD standard, aspect ratios, IFO editing, .... you get the picture.

So, in an effort to help the newbies, and minimize the amount of time that the accomplished DVD rippers are spending answering the same questions over and over, I am proposing that we start to colloborate on techniques used for creating DVD Backups to DVD-R.

Specifically, I am suggesting that the moderators create a new topic within this board dedicated to the posting of explicit "recipes" for backing up individual DVD movies. Within this new board, seperate threads could be dedicated to individual movies. Within each movie thread, an accomplished DVD Ripper (Lightning UK! or anyone else with a successful track record) could post the exact steps (in excruciating detail) that they took to reduce the movie down to a file size less than 4.7 GB (DVD-R standard), while still maintaining 100% video quality and only 1 audio soundtrack (5.1 or 2 channel)

Once this process begins, we can start to standardize the programs used in the DVD manipulation (DVD Decrypter + IFOEdit + Prassi PrimoDVD?), and further standardize the completed 4.7GB movie output.

I hope this doesn't sound too far fetched, but I think that this forum is an awesome location for information exchange, and I'd like to do my part to help make it more efficient. Please reply to this and lets talk this through. Thanks.

No not yet. I'm still waiting for more people to respond to this thread. As I stated above, I can't really do anything myself, it's going to have to be a group effort.

the more knowledgeable people wouldnt have to answer the same questions over and over if people werent so stupid and maybe read everything first.i understand that everyone must start somewhere.but i didnt post 1 question on this forum until i read the entire thing ..whether i understood it or not.
i understand what you are saying and it sounds pretty cool but what if also there was some kind of filtering system for when someone asks a question that has already been dealt with and it wont let them post but rather tell them that there is already an answer.i too am REALLY sick of the ones that simply say "help"
or "newbie .please help"...they could just start at the "newbies read this first" section.

          backup suggestion

well, if you are just backin up DVDs then why not make an 'image' of the DVD and burn a new one.

For example, PrimoDVD will make an 'image' of the dvd you have in the drive and then you can burn that image to a DVD-R.

Good idea obasanjou! Would love to see some step by step guides. However, am also prepared to read all the posts and hope that some of it will sink in. Its a good way to become familiar with probs others are having. But the seperate forum and guides does seem good - prob is it wld take a while to write.

Love to help but am just starting myself......

              New way for DVD backup

I saw your post and I just wasnted to ask you if you have ever tried using a tv capture card to capture your dvds to your computer and then burn them back to a blank dvd. I tried and it dowes work although like everything else it had some problems just with the data rate nothing more though. I captured black hawk down and got it right back up on a copy, and since Imy capture card has a build in MPEG-2 hardware decoder then all I need to do after a capture is burn right back to the blank dvd. Please let me know if you or anybody that you know has tried this way or not bvecause I want to see if it is my capture card that is giving me the problems or if other people have also run into some problems. Thanks

I wish it was that easy

You can make a backup of that dvd with primo but it wont play on your set top, I not trying to discredit they guy because if it was the easy IT WOULD BE GOOD NEWS FOR ME. There are a couple of diffrent ways of doing the eaisiest way to RIP is to get dvd decrypter and then rip to your hard drive and use some DVD CREATION SOFTWARE to burn it back to a blank dvd-r.

                    Not that easy

That's what I figured. I have some vob's on my hard drive. Someone told me that I would have to convert them to mpeg2 format before I can use MYDVD to create a DVD. Any Idea how I can convert them? Also, how do you know which vob to pull off the dvd? I've been searching this forum for a newbies guide, but can't find one.

                      well

i would tell you to hell with the ripping and just capture, dvd decrypeter is really good though, it will rip and ENCODE into MPEG2 so as soon as the rip is over it you will have an mpeg file ready and waiting for you, you then import to ulead and then off you go.

What I do is I take a tv capture card, capture the dvd to my hdd then I burn that capture back to a dvd, very quick easy and simple

                        TV Capture

Will any capture card do? I have a Guillemot Cougar Video Edition card. I'm not sure if I can capture in MPEG2 or not. I also have the Ulead software that came with the card.

                          Well...

I especially like the Happuage PVR 250 I want the 350 but it does hardware Mpeg encoding, so while you are captureing you can be surfing the net or doing whatever and you wont hav any dropped frames

The ATI all in wonder crap had compatibility problems from the get go and they stated that if a dvd player or any device with protection on it is detected then it will not capture. Happuage Wins all out for me!

                            All In Wonder - Good

The All In Wonder card is "very good". It will not work with win 98. I have been using it with win xp with no problems. It captures straigt to mpeg2 with tons of quality control options. I agree that others are better, but the ATI is pretty good and has lots of connections plus a cool breakout plug, so u dont need to go behind the box all of the time.

The question I have about DVD to DVD-R is this: Can u rip (not capture) a DVD to the HD and have it output straight to mpeg1 or mpeg2? Does any program do this? If not, is it feasible that it could be created?

                              Yeah

Smartripper or DVDcrypter can perfor those actions for you. If your movie is longer than 2hours, which most of them are, you will run into problems with putting that movie on a dvd-r.
