gh,
A 'mock strip' will resolve 99+ % of authoring errors. Since you can play other burned DVDs without problems, and this is the only one you can't get to play, and we've eliminated the possibility that the compilation is too small. I'd guess there is a very good chance this will resolve the problem.
It really isn't as complicated as it looks at first glance, but if you feel intimidated by the procedure, there is another way to 'mock strip' using the latest version of VobBlanker. But since the capability was recently added, there are no guides online. I could walk you through it, since it's quite easy to do, if you're uncomfortable using IfoEdit.

Glad you found a solution.
Guess it will remain as one of those Unsolved DVD Mysteries as to why the backups wouldn't work in your standalone.

@Taelon - VobBlanker does not do a full mock strip and reset all pointers. See here.
Stick with IfoEdit for the time being.
EDIT: I think v2.0.1.0 has implemented a full mock strip. Will need to check.

blutach, I never suggested using VB to mock strip, the link I included was to 2COOL's guide at doom9

I'm sorry - I must have misinterpreted post 63 of this thread.

blu, you're right I did say that
I also said it was an undocumented feature in the new version (v201), I'm also not sure it does a full 'mock strip' with regards to menus. However there have been reports of people resolving problems by simply opening their compilation in VobBlanker and running full processing on the titlesets (but I'm sure you know that, since all the above has been discussed at doom9).
