Did you say that any characters that GOCR didn't recognise a _ would be used?
I have seen several of these in a couple of DVD's. The films are Japanese with English subs. Obviously, Japanese names don't get translated well but there are English words.

nwg, that's right, anything that's not recognized ends up as a '_'. I don't have an easy way to fix that, the GOCR code is very cryptic, and there's no database to tweak/expand, unfortunately... If you want to write an OCR algorithm, I'll help you, I have some ideas!

Beta 0.90 of DVDSubEdit is now available here...
The major changes are: Support to read and write .sup files, new slider to move subpics left or right (if possible), and improved OCR for italics.
Here's the change log from beta 0.85- Added code to move subpics left and right when possible! This can only be done, for now, if the background does not cover the entire picture.
- Added option to quickly reload the last set of vob files (without re-scanning) (see the "File" menu). You can't re-time in that mode.
- Added code to load sup files. Note: you can't reload an individual subpic in that mode, or perform any re-timing.
- Added "Save as sup file". NOTE: DVDSubEdit does not fix PTS discontinuities...
- Added shortcut (Ctrl-T) to run OCR on the current subpic.
- Added code to fix OCR problems with italics, and to better recognize brackets.
- Entering a value in "duration" had no effect. This has been fixed.
- DVDSubEdit no longer complains about the full title not having been loaded if you drag/drop a complete set of VOBs and try to re-time.
- Fixed a bug in Beta 0.86-0.87 that caused "Apply to All" to not work well unless the vertical move slider was used.
- DVDSubEdit no longer crashes when it encounters a badly formed spu (missing packs for example).
Enjoy!

Impressive is a huge understatement. This is clearly new prog of the year! Forget about the next 11 months.

jeanl,
I have just tried your DVDSubEdit 0.90 and I got most changes to stick but can't seem to get the color change to stick.
I started with a blurry green subtitle after the movie was run thru vob&ifoEdit, and I got it to change to a readable green by changing the transparency, and I was able to get the subs to move to the bottom of the screen, But , then the color change that I applied to blue, didn't take.
In DVDSubEdit program it shows as the blue I'm looking for and I applied/saved all modifs but when I preview it on WinDVD it shows as a readable green with a couple subtitles flickering to an almost transparent black that is unreadable for a second or two.
Any ideas what I may be doing incorrect?
Thanks and cheersMBK

MikeyBK, I just downloaded 0.90 and tried it on a DVD, and the color change seems to work for me. Things to make sure of:
- Check that when you reload with DVDSubEdit, you indeed get the color you want
- Check that you did apply the new settings to the subtitle track you're looking at with PowerDVD (careful, often times there are two, one for Pan and Scan, one for widescreen).
- Do you have multiple DCSQTs in your subpics (sets of commands). Normally there's only 2 (one to start, the second to stop the display). If you have more than 2, and the subsequent ones change the color back to the original, that could explain what you see in PowerDVD...
I don't understand why the subtitle would be flickering, unless perhapse you had multiple DCSQTs. Was that the case?
How do the subtitles show in the original DVD? Do they flicker also?

Nice work, jean and I'm sure this import function will be handy for a lot of swedish usersl!Comment

cynthia, the next version will no longer be a beta (imagine that!!!).
Do a lot of swedish users reauthor their subtitles? The funny thing is, I almost never do!!!

DVDSubEdit is finally out of beta!
Version 1.0 is now available here...
Here's the change log from beta 0.90- Added code to crop subpic to the bare minimum width, allowing horizontal moving. This can be applied to all in the usual manner.
- Added option to move subpics flush with the nearest border.
- The main window is now resizable. I cleaned up a lot of the display code, in an attempt to make things faster and cleaner.
- The main window can also be minimized, or maximized, imagine that! The size and position are saved from session to session.
- DVDSubEdit no longer needs the CLUT to identify the pixels used for the characters.
- Added a "Auto CLUT" check box to show the main text pixels in white, and all others in black.
- Added option to load an IFO file after loading a SUP file (this one just for CoNS!).
- Improved the OCR code, especially with regards to identifying word boundaries
- Fixed a bug that caused the app to crash if you fast reloaded a vob that was no longer there.
- Fixed the infamous "display freezes, app starts writing all over" bug! A brush wasn't being released....
- DVDSubEdit no longer crashes if you quit while running the OCR function.
- The "save subpic to ppm" option was shrinking the subpicture by a factor 2. This has been fixed.
- Removed the trailing '\n' at the end of the last line in the OCR output display.
Enjoy!
