r0lZ, do you know how AnyDVD does the jump to the main menu (or jump to the movie)? Is it 100% foolproof (as the PgcEdit method) or is it a coin toss (whether or not it will work)?

I usually copy all my movies with that option and w/ menus and subtitles only, no extras. When I re-insert a disc that I was just watching , it asks if it should resume from where it left off, so I'm not sure what rOlZ meant when he was asking 'Very annoying, isn't it?'
I'm still trying to learn the whole complexity of DVD structure, so this info would go a long way to help me keep discerning what really works and what really doesn't. Well actually, the info PLUS the actual testing of the different programs that are out there.
I have test-tried many/MANY! new programs since I've joined here and have found several to be absolutely fantastic, BUT, I have run across just as many DUDs as well, programs that stall, freeze, crash, or down right just don't work like it is said to.
But I know that if I truly understand the structure of the DVD that I will be better equiped to know why some programs work so well while others turn out to be DUDs. Thanks and CheersMBK

Mikey - to check it out, simply rip a disk with that option checked and then trace the DVD through with PgcEdit. I bet it will go from FP-PGC to the movie title (by-passing the register setting).
This would also be very difficult to do successfully 100% of the time in an episodic DVD, where identifying the title is problematical.

A favour please Mikey? Can you please redo those shots as PNGs and repost them (removing the JPGs which are very large). Folks on dialup and GPRS have real problems. Thanks.
Now, screenshot 2 is pertinent. It replaces all the real stuff in VMG First Play PGC with a straight Jump to Title 1 (which I guess is the main movie - it probably does this by looking at the length of the title). The original DVD will have a lot different and will typically enter Title 1 with several GPRM/SPRM registers set. Therein lies the problem, which the jeanl/PgcEdit methodology solves.

I'm with r0lZ and Blu. I personally never run AnyDVD. With DVDD and PgcEdit there's no need to. As for using CloneDVD2 or DVDBlank to kill unwanted video (FBI Warning, Rating screens, etc) it's difficult at best when the videos reside in the VTSM. Jeanl's guide for bypassing annoying screens using PgcEdit is excellent. Add VOB Blanker to the mix and you'll have the only two tools you'll ever need to get rid of such things.

Cam

I just tried the latest version of AnyDVD (v5.9.4.1) and it replaces the whole FP-PGC stuff by a straight jump to the main movie or the main Root menu. Therefore, it's really unsafe to use it to rip a DVD.
MikeyBK, of course, if you are interested by the main movie only, it doesn't matter, since when you extract the movie from the DVD, you generate a new DVD with a totally new authoring. But in this case, it is useless to use AnyDVD, since what it does is lost anyway.
Also, the RSM problem I've explained above cannot happen when you go straight to the main movie. But it can happen if you go to the main menu, and will certainly happen if a RSM is used to jump to the movie from the menu. This case is rare, though.Last edited by r0lZ; 3 Mar 2006, 08:15 AM.Comment

I forgot to say: for similar reasons, it is better to leave the prohibited user operations as they are on the original DVD, and remove them selectively, only when they are really annoying. The PUOs are indeed useful for many things, and removing them all could have strange results.Comment

Re PUOps: I have all my menu domains at 192 and title domains at 0. And always leave PUOps in VOBs untouched by the ripper (else you risk the angle icon on your screen).
@Mikey - PNG format is much smaller size than JPG. In MSPAINT (for example), choose Save As, type PNG. Compare! Better quality for MUCH less size. There's an FAQ on this somewhere - see FAQ Index in my sig.

Thanks rOlZ for shedding some light on what you meant. I guess it's good to know that the problems won't affect my copies that much since I'm jumping straight to main movie, but will keep in mind what you said when I come accross a movie that I decide that I want the Extras with the menus. I'll probably leave the movie structure more intact on those that I decide to keep the extras for.
Like I mentioned . I haven't had any problems with any copies. I only use AnyDVD as my decrypter, but I do use the jump straight to movie function on it, no problems encountered as of yet, hundreds so far. The only time I used AnyDVD 'ripper' to rip a movie was to copy a movie that I previously could not due to a few major scrapes, I tried many programs with no luck and basically gave up, but when it was added as part of the update and I learned about VTSFix, I tried it and it did the job. Hey what can I say!?, it worked.!
I'm still 'trying to learn' and have to weed thru what is 'really' valuable and what is just unnecessary. But I truly am starting to learn the difference.
Also Les,
here are a couple screenshots of the same identical cropped image and I still don't quite understand why you're saying that the png is smaller??MBK
