dvd decrypter is unmatched, nero recode beats shrink in speed, but they're both on top in quality as far as transcoders go.

no need for an alternative unless you're after better compression, in which case encoding is the way to go; try dvd rebuilder

A combo of ripper+transcoder is ShrinkTo5, gives mostly sharp video quality and is fast, but use is "as it is", the developers dont listen to any suggestions and are egoistic.

Thats why I dont use their product, but you can try it.

You may want to give Pgcedit a try with the plugin wizard, that gives better quality then dvdfab but dvdfab is easier.

Depends on a lot of things. Are you talking free or pay?

I was weened on DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. I have the utmost respect for both of those programs and authors. I still have both installed with the latest updated (pfcedit, etc) files for DVD Decrypter. I like to keep my hands in it for alternative purposes (like when you want to get out the wrench and go turn some nuts and bolts to keep up the practice).

I find though that while both still work (DVD Decrypter with the help of the burning community) they fall a bit short for me sometimes. I have seen DVD Shrink have problems with some DVD's (though I still do use it sometimes in combo with DVD Decrypter to burn or Recode 2 and Nero to burn) and Recode 2 would process it fine. Recode 2 is faster and uses less cpu power. DVD Decrypter is just a bit too tedious for me to run through all the steps (and I have never seen DVD Decrypter be the one that works when all other programs fail) when other programs will do it easier and faster, like DVD Fab (which had its issues for awhile but has turned into a dam fine program) and AnyDVD (which for me is hands down the best, although it's not free, a one time purchase and free updates for life).

It's all up to the individual preferences. Some like the process of doing all the steps with DVD Decrypter (either being a diehard DVD Decrypter fan or like the feeling of being involved in the whole process and getting it done for free, albiet with the extra time/work involved). I'm more of a "get it done quick with the least steps" kinda guy if the end result is the same (time is worth just as much as money to me). Whatever floats your boat.
