Problem with languages [DVDShrink+DVDRemake]

Hello everybody,

I have a big problem with DVD reauthoring using DVDRemake and DVDShrink (or CloneDVD). I use to firstly cut out languages and/or subpicture streams that I don't need with DVDShrink and after this I edit the menus and extras with DVDRemake. I always need English and Italian languages and subtitles on my reauthored DVD (no commnetary streams by the way...) Here's the guide that I read so there you can find the things I do :

Depending if I check or uncheck "Logical remapping of enabled streams" on DVDshrink (Edit --> Preferences --> Output Files), the problem is slightly different. Here we go:

1. "Logical remapping of enabled streams" unchecked:
If this is the case, and If I exlude let's say Spanish and Portuguese but take the menus with DVDShrink, I can no more change language or subpicture with the remote from my DVD Player. Furthermore I have the same problem with WinDVD Player (software for Windows). Obviously, I can change languages and subpictures with the "Set Up" menu from the main DVD Title.

1. "Logical remapping of enabled streams" checked:
In this second case, subpictures and languages remain changeable via remote control and WInDVD during movie playing, but, after I edit menus with DVDRemake, the menu buttons are not remapped and if I select, let's say "Italian" on the DVD "Set Up" menu, the movie plays in English and vice versa. The result is always the same, no matter if my preferred language in DVDShrink is one of the languages in the list or it isn't.:

So, I have to choose to change languages via the remote (and not with the "Set up" menu) or vice versa: beeing able only to use the "set up" menu but not the remote....

Is there a way to sort out this problem?

This is a well known problem.

When "Logical remapping of enabled streams" is ticked, DVDShrink tries to change the VM commands in the DVD to adapt them to the new stream numbers. This method work very well when there are no "indirect" SetSTN commands. (Indirect commands use GPRMs instead of constant values to initialize the streams. Therefore, it is very difficult to change the value of the stream, as the program has to find where the GPRM is initialized, and change that command instead of the SetSTN command.)

Your assumption "The result is always the same" is wrong. The remapping method is perfectly safe if all SetSTN commands are direct ones.
You can check if it is safe to use this DVDShrink option with the DVDShrink plugin for PgcEdit. If it's not safe, you have to either untick the option, or modify the navigation commands manually to fix the stream numbers.

Note also that only some players have problems with the remote when the option is not ticked. Unfortunately, you have a bad one...

By the way, as I wrote, I have the same problem with my WinDVD soft player either than with my table (KiSS) Dvd player.

Thanks, but if you mean your excellent FAQ: Logical Remapping of Enabled Streams I already read it (I even put a link that points to it on my first message on this thread, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything that helps me editing the menus ....

You can remove the audio and subpicture tracks in DvdReMake by disabling them in the VTS domain. No need to use DVDShrink for this.

I think your dvd player does not like "holes" in the middle disabled tracks. Thus you're unable to select through the disabled tracks. Your DVD probably has indirect SetSTN commands. Logically remapping streams will take some work. Look in the button command for audio and subpicture menus to make sure.

Yes, me too I am thinking that my KiSS DP-450 doesn't like the "holes" as you call them . I tried to play the DVDs on another player and it just worked fine. Maybe I will need a new dvd player..... and this is a pity because i like very much the features of my KiSS player

The simpler way to avoid the gaps in the list of streams is to duplicate an existing stream to fill the gaps. Of course, in this case, you have to use DVDShrink with the remapping option off. The drawback of this method is that you will have several times the same stream in the list, but IMO, it's the best method if you don't know how to edit the VM commands yourself.

You like your KISS?! Incredible! I have a KISS DP-450 (the first KISS ever) and I really think it's the worst player we can find on the market! It is full of bugs, and was very expensive! Its remote is also almost unusable.

But that's not the subject. Strangely, I have never noticed problems with gaps between streams with my KISS. But it is true that I try to avoid the gaps whenever possible, either by remapping the streams with Shrink if the SetSTN commands are direct ones, or by removing the gaps and converting the VM commands manually with PgcEdit, or by duplicating a stream to fill the gaps.

BTW, you are right. DRM cannot do a better job than Shrink. As I have explained above, that's almost impossible to automate that feature, unless all navigation possibilities of the whole DVD are simulated via some kind of automatic trace. Currently, DRM and PgcEdit cannot do that.
