    Avi File to DVD

I have several avi files that I would like to burn to DVD to play on my home dvd player.

I have tried every type of conversion software to convert from avi to mepg2 so I can finally get them to vob files.

My latest attempt is with tmpenc 2.5. I am not getting any sound on them when I attempt to convert them. I have loaded gspot and it tells me I have the correct codecs but it must be something I am doing wrong in tmpenc 2.5.

I have read the guides and still can't make it work. What settings do I use for audio? When I select a file it shows the avi file in the video AND audio section. Do I need to break down the sound some way. If so, could someone please tell me how.

    Thanks.

is it ac3 audio? if so you need to demux this first. i use virtualdubmod to do this.
then just convert video part only in tmpgenc 2.5
then load the video from this and the sound from virtualdubmod (you may need to fix this if it says the file is nto supported, using ac3fix) into tmpgenc dvd author

I use tmpenc authoring and that converts them for me. Or DVD shrink will convert them also.

I am going to try some of these suggestions. Will get back with the results. Thanks for everyone's help.

I can copy a dvd just fine using dvd decrypter and dvd shrink. But when I download an avi I just haven't been able to get it to dvd.

again...nero vision express........read the help file,,easy to do..load your AVI,,,it converts it and burns it and will play on anything..
if you dont have nero 6 and have to buy it,well worth it or download the trail version and try it..
am i the only one who has a simple easy solution to many burning projects using nero6 ,,or are there others out there and not saying anything ..??
of course i am fairly new to dvd burning and tried to find the easiest way to do things first...and reading many forums,,and the help from others who know way more than i have helped me get to what i can do now..
so keep trying ...and learning...and listening to others...
              good luck..

I've got Nero 6 with Nero Express. How do you load your avi file? I see where you can load VOB files but not AVI? This would be great if I could make it work.

I get "unexpected file format" in nero when I try to load an avi.

                    printout from gspot

Here's a pic of the output from a gspot file I am having trouble getting audio with. Hope they come through okay. This is the first time I have tried attachments. All of them seem to do the same thing. No sound.

                    Thanks.

I believe at some point you need to change the audio bitrate to 48kbps for DVD mpeg2 compatibility.
I suggest you run the avi through VirtualDubMod to demux the audio and video and recombine them in TMPGEnc Plus.

                        To hmharris:

In addition to what sfheath suggested, In TMPGEnc, under "Environmental Settings" > "VFAPI Plugin" rightclick on the "DirectShow Multimedia Reader" and set to the highest priority. This should allow TMPGEnc to read a properly encoded AVI file.

"File" > "Open Video File". Go to "Video" and select "Direct Stream Copy". Then go to "Streams" > "Streams List" and click "Demux"

Thank you for your kind answer. I know this gets tiring trying to answer all of these questions.

I put the avi file through the virtualdubmod and go to video and select direct stream copy then to to streams streams list and click demux. I ask for mp3 and mp2 on separate occasions which hosed the Tempenc program up completely when I entered the video name and audio name in it. So I went back and click on wav in virtualdubmod. This time Tempenc took that configuration with the wav audio file but there was still not any sound while it was converting.

Should I be able to hear the sound during the conversion? Did I get too impatient and stop the conversion too soon?

Or am I doing something wrong in tempenc. In tempenc I use the wizard. It selects NTSC and "CBR MPEG-1 Layer II audio (MP2) is the selection. Next I pick the video file which is an avi file and the audio automatically selects the same file name. So I change the audio to the file i have demuxed - an mp3 or mp2 and use it for the audio file.

The expert setting for source is non-interlace
the aspect ratio is :3 525 line ntsc 704X480
content of video is : Video movie

Under environmental setting Direct show multimedia file reader has a priority of 4.

The stream type on the very front of the program is set to System video +audio

                              See anything incorrect?

                              Thanks.
