    SONY DRU-700A Bittsetting?

I was just wondering if this DVD burner has bittsetting, I have just installed the latest firmwear from sony (VY06).
If it does how do I burn in the DVD-ROM format?
Do I have to use NERO?

I have been using DVDshrink and decypter to make my backups and sometimes they work on my JVC DVD player and sometimes they load and then stop or jump all over the place.

I use TDK +R for my movie backups and have tried -R but they dont seem to work as good.

I was hopeing that burning in DVD-ROM format would solve my problems.
If this burner does not support bittsetting can anyone recomend one that does.
If anyone has had success in this regard please let me know.
    Thanks alot!

    Hello

Unfortunatly the VY05 firmware flash removed the support for bitsetting, you can read more here:

And finaly my friend here http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters you can find out which drives support this booktype change (bitsetting)

Thanks fil, that site says that the VY05 firmwear disables bitsetting but I just downloaded the VY06 firmwear, but it only said that it would increase reliablity.
do u have a burner with bitsetting?
      Is it worth getting one?

        Hello

I cant imagine that VY05 takes the support away and then the VY06 adds that support again and as you say just adds reliability.

I dont have a Drive that supports bitsetting but since it is just a good idea I dont see why you shouldnt get one ( I would consider buying on if I needed a new drive).

The only thing I wouldnt consider just now is a DL drive because of several factors, like reliability, price of Media and software support not to mention the amount of bugs still surrounding this "New Tech".

        Hope this prove useful

I don't have a DL drive at the moment but what from I read, bitsetting is esential for max compatibility with the discs.

I have already used bitsetting on a Panasonic player that cannot read DVD+. I use a Ricoh drive and and I am looking at the Ricoh DL drive or perhaps the LG one as good ones to get.

            Hi nwg

Your right bitsetting is needed to assure maximum compatibility but like all the brilliant inventions/discoveries this was to provide said compatibility with older standalone and PC drives.

I think it is a very usefull tool indeed and every drive should support it (Maybe Phillips is heavy on the copyright usage rights)

As to DL drives I will wait untill things are a "little better" I'm very well served and have good reason to wait, a piece of advice that I more than willingly empart with all (There I dont stand alone ddlooping shares similar views on this).

A ideal situation would be Nero extending their support of bitsetting to other drives & firmware rather than just Plextor, read here

thanks fil those sites were a big help, I could not find any firmwear for my 700a to enable bitsetting but I did find some dvd burners that did, If your interested these ones seem to be the best at the moment.

I dont know if I will buy one yet but I spose it will be better than buying another DVD player!
              Thanks again for your help.

Bitsetting is implemented by the writer manufacturer. Nero reads the firmware of the writer and if it is functional allows bitsetting in it's software. It should be made available in all writers.

I use Nero and bitsetting with my Ricoh. I would have liked it with my LG 4040 but is is only available on the DL model.

Liteon and NEC also has bitsetting on their DL drives (this might be due to unofficial firmware).

DL DVD-R is supposed to be announced this months by Pioneer.

I would like to see a combined a single layer / DL - and + drive. I don't think their will ever be a DL+RW or -RW. The closest thing might be blu ray when it comes out for PC's.

                  Hi

This is great news about the -DL format finally coming up.

Another 3/6 months and I'll be able to buy a drive that supports all the formats -/+ R/RW and -/+DL add in DVD RAM and perfect. (and then I wake up)

                  Good things all

My money is on LG creating a all in one writer. They already do single layer -/+, DL + and RAM. One more format should be easy.

I wish there had been a tool like OmniPatcher in the early days when you struggled between cheap media and original firmwares that didn't liked the cheap discs.

"A graphical all-in-one patcher to increase the burning speed of low-speed media, change write strategies, increase the reading speed of burnt DVD media, enable auto-bitsetting, fine-tune high-speed burns, fix the blinking orange light problem, and enable crossflashing. Make a custom-patched firmware tailored for your own needs with this patcher!"

                            Hi guys

The question is not who will win the race and support all fomats under one roof, but rather who will do it to a all round high standard & reliability.

I bet no one for a long while.

I have faith in the money making machine that will sell rubbish drives full of bugs. ooops they already do?!

thanks cynthia I checked out the site and i assume the VY06 flashware is the same VY06 flashwear I downloaded from sony.
If so how do I enable bitsetting?
                              Thanks to everyone who replyed.
