    Thanks for all your help, I just went and updated my drivers for USB 2.0 in device manager and it seemed to pick up speed, I think I am still gonna upgrade my firmware but it looks like upgrading my USB 2.0 drivers fixed it.

        Not sure if you care or not, but I have the internal version of this same drive (710a) and the newest FW seems pretty good. It updates burning -R to 12x and +R DL to 4x.

        BTW this version of the Sony drive seems to be a re-badged Lite-ON. I hope if works as well as my old 500a.

          The 710x is a Lite-On and the good one actually. Unlike the reports you see at DVD Decrypter about how Lite-On gets Pack Header errors out the Kazoo.. Well the 710x doesn't have this problem as older Lite-On or re-bagged Sony distributed products.

          I'm using the DRU-710A myself.
