I can't seem to use the BookMark feature, please help if possible.

Hi Everyone,

Great forum this! I’m hoping one of you will be able to help me with my predicament. I recently purchased a Pioneer DVR-109 DVD burner and some DVD+R DL disks. I copied a movie onto a DVD+R DL disks and it plays perfectly in both my drives on my PC. Unfortunately it does not work properly on my standalone player. I can just about get it to load but when I select a chapter which I know is on the second layer it doesn’t load. I can hear the laser struggle to read the disk. What I was hoping to do was use the bookmark feature and change the disk from DVD+R to DVD-R which I read about in the FAQ's. Unfortunately (for me) the bookmark feature does not seem to work for me in either DVD Decrypter or DVD Bitsetter (screen dumps attached). I’m worried that this procedure simply cannot be done with the Pioneer DVR-109 drive. Bit gutted as I thought I was onto a winner buying a Pioneer drive (I’ve been told they are good burners). If I can use the bookmark feature to convert to DVD-R and it still doesn't resolve my problem I'll still be alot happier knowing that it is at least possible with the Pioneer drive. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I have learnt much from these forums over the last few months reading other posts and the FAQ’s. Thanks to this forum I can back up my movies using DVD Decrypter, Shrink, Nero. I can reauthor, split movies onto multiple disks. Now I’ve registered to post this question as I'm well and truly stuck

This site does not indicate that the drive can use bitsetting (and it usually does, if the drive can do this).

As well, you would convert it to DVD-ROM, not DVD-R. See What's bitsetting in my sig.

Both the Pioneer DVR 108 and 109 AUTOMATICALLY perform bitsetting for +R DL media, therefore you don't have to (nor should you try to) do any bitsetting/bookmarking...

Thanks to both for your replies, I was considering sending it back and replacing for a HP DVD640i (only one with bitsetting available from the site I bought the Pioneer). If what you say is true then I'd be wasting my time, I guess I have a 2 crap standalone DVD players.

Shame it's an automated process, I don't trust automated. With automated you are left to assume it's doing what it's supposed to but are unable to check

I would suggest to you that, at this point in time, the "risk reward ratio" of burning DL media is far too high, based on current pricing. If I were you, I'd presently consider using DVD Shrink or similar to compress to DVD-5 (Single layer) size and burn.

It now appears that the first major price reduction re: D/L media, of perhaps 30%, will occur near the end of the summer - with another significant price reduction, of perhaps 50%, by year-end...

The movie in question is of an adult nature. Hence my motivation to resolving my problem. It's comfier to sit on my sofa watching the movie than sitting on a chair in front of my PC. I'll have to now go out and buy a decent dvd player. Worth every penny though

Given that bitsetting is automatic, it then means your burned media isn't being quite recognised by the player.

Check your burn afterwards (see my sig). And get media that your player likes (see my sig).

Also remember rules re layer breaks etc.

I'd still suggest you use DVD Shrink in combination with DVD-5 media...

I'll do the burn test when I get home from work tonight and also check what model my standalone player is. I confess I bought the cheapest DVD+R DL possible (Datasafe Ritek). If it is a media issue then I'd be more than happy to spend more in future. Thanks for your advice.

I've already backed the movie(s) to DVD5 and split to two disks to ensure 0 compression and best picture quality possible (essential). I just wanted full functionality (menu's, scene selection, gallery etc) cause I'm a perfectionist. I might tweak with the compression and see what it's like on a DVD5.

Boss thinks I'm busy cause all he can here is me tapping away at my keyboard. Suppose I really should do some work now.

You can split a disk to 2 DVD-5s and retain menus (at least on disk 1) with DVDFab - get it for free at www.mrbass.org/dvdfab/

I'll be in touch once I've sorted the issues out. They're already backed up without menu's. If you don't care for the menu's then I can easily run some more off and they're good to go. Can't PM you I'm afraid, not enough posts yet. Happy to oblige though, you've been really helpful.
