suggestions for long movies

looking to back up a really long movie...(forest gump).no extras really to delete and the only way the movie will fit is with 52% compression...is the only way around this to split the movie?..probably a rhetorical question...just curious of what others do with long movies...thanks

First I should try to use re-author mode and see what compression I would end up with there. 52% I would never go for - in that case I would split it.

Mostly do reauthors - at that stage it's very rare to have to compress to much. But I would say 75-85%.

But do use the AEC option.

I have gone as low as %69.7 on LOTR - The Two Towers but, I used the AEC Sharp feature in DVD Shrink. Turned out pretty good.

I always use the AEC mode and use the sharp feature on all reauthors. Forrest Gump is 52% with full back up and 54 with reauthor and movie only...virtually no special features. I guess splitting in two makes the most sense...I dont know how Cynthia finds it rare to get low compression with reauthoring...maybe i am doing something wrong....what is the best guide for splitting movies?....thanks

The problem in Sweden is that they fill the DVDs with to much crapp - ok they call it bonus material - so the main movie is already very compressed to be able to fit among all that extras. So when you reauthor it don't need much compression to fit on a single layered disc.

Even seen some DVDs where they just add half of the original movie again just to fill up the original DVD.

Use DVD Decrypter (v.3.54 is the latest) to "rip" in "File Mode" (From the "Edit" drodpown menu, select "ALL files", NOT "movie files").

then use (Freeware version) DVDFab to split onto two discs - Disc 1 will have the active menu, all "extras" and the first approximate 1/2 of the movie. Disc 2 will have the second half of the movie...

uh oh..here comes a real stupid question....does it matter if it is not a dvd9....it is just a single layer, as far as I can tell

If you are saying that the ORIGINAL DVD is a single layer DVD, then you have no need to split it, as it will fit on a single layer burnable DVD.

Just use DVD Decrypter to "Read .ISO" (Unprotect and copy to hard drive) - and then to "Write .ISO" (burn)...

the point is that it is a 2.5 hour movie...and the compression comes in around 53%, whether full backup or movie only
