Blank Media & Quality FAQ

Hi. That FAQ at the top of this thread was helpful but a little confusing. I saw that TDK -RW and -R are at the top of the list in terms of quality, but -R doesn't work in my DVD players. I have just started backing up my DVD movies, using TDK +R, and on many occasions have been very unhappy with the results. A lot of fuzziness and blurriness, especially with bright colors, and especially in shots that are focusing in the distance. I noticed in the FAQ that it said the same manufacturer may have different quality between -R and +R, but TDK +R was not on the list. Has anyone else had trouble with them?

Maybe I should switch to Verbatim blank discs, I notice many people on this message board have praised it. I also didn't see them on the list in the FAQ, has anyone had good results with them? I've heard the concept that you lose a little something in quality with each copy, but I'm hoping to lose as little quality as possible.

I don't think hardware is the problem, AFAIK mine is an above average burner. I use DVD Shrink and Decrypter.

This is my first time posting though I have lurked here many times and have always found the solution to any dilemma I ran into. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi All,
I have had some slight playback freezes and skips lately on both burned and retail disks. I did a Nero CD Speed test.
I think it might be the player Sony DVP-NS7159. It has been the main player in the house since I can't remember. Here is the burned test results.

I also have been looking on your suggested quality disk links site, http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm,and have not found my disks listed.
What's your opinion? Should I get a new player? How about the disk quality?

I would maybe try burning @4X & check one of those out first. Failing that try another one @2X.

How about a burn log and a little detail on how you back up your movies?
There a lot of variables that affect quality.

Are you asking me for my burn log? I'll have to save the next one or is there a folder with old ones?
I use DVDD or FAB to rip depending on when the DVD was produced. I use Shrink to compress and encode and DVDD to always burn.

Ok from the link above (in the first post) I have found my imation dvd's to be CMC Magnetics crap. Well the first 4 100 pks I had Bought from Walmart had a very good sucess rate, then the 5th after 60 discs I had 3 good ones which really got me on the hunt for why I was having problems. I was looking at the local stores and the best i could find from memory were sony but looking at the media ID is SONY-D21-00. Further on down the page it said sony was faked in 2003 by a HK manufacturer that was unknown, is this a valid Sony ID? Staples also had some from india and I was curious about it but not enough to actually but any of it to try, anyone know about these as well?

Well no one wants to answer my last post here, but out of 15 burns one failed. It's funny this media was made in taiwan, but in the 50 pks (the label is nearly identical) is made in japan. I have observed this in a few stores, but it's working and was fine.
I went to take the imation discs back to walmart and they were not very amenable as i did not save the bad ones, but after lots of bickering and threatening to take my business elsewhere they gave me a new pack and took out of it what was missing from the original. It is made in india with a media code of MBIPG-R04-01, we will test these to see how well they do as nomorecoasters.com doesn't list that id code. I will save all of my bad ones and when i get 50 or 100 walmart will get them back and give me a refund yet....thank god i have 4 walmarts to hit as they will remember me in this one for a while. ROTFLMAO!!!!!

Funny thing I am fairly new to burning movies and out of aout 75 or so movies I have burnt I think I had maybe about 8 at the most that failed and a couple of those were because of a computer freeze up I have used sony maxcell and verbatium disc maybe I am lucky I guess
