Region Free but it won't play on my dvd player

I'm using smartbuy 8x dvd-r media, burning at 8x w/an nec nd-3520A.

Used shrink to compress it, made it region free, burnt it and it won't play on my dvd player.

my player says 'cannot be played due to area limitations (or restrictions)'

it doesn't make any sense because the original is ntsc region 1 and it doesn't play on my player as well.

any ideas?

Try to burn the back up at 2X (8X is too fast andy may cause problems with playback)
