burning issues - if i can view on HD does that mean rip went perfectly?

Hi guys,

this is all new to me so be nice Basically i want to copy some dvds of mine. I have ripped them using Decrypter and then shrunk them using DVD Shrink. Once i get to that stage I can view them fine on my hard drive with Power DVD when they are VOB files. I have done this with 3 movies so far.

Firstly does the fact that I can view them properly on my hard drive mean that they have ripped fine and all macrovision protection etc. has been removed? If this is the case it will narrow my issues down to burning which i detail below.

The next bit is where i run into trouble. I have tried burning them with Nero 6, Record Now Max, and also with DVD Decrypter by turning them into Isos with DVD Shrink. The burn always seems to go fine and completes but producess a dvd that cannot be read in my dvd player (standalone) or my computers dvd player.

There have been exceptions to this. I managed to get one copy that worked in both my comp and standalone player by burning in ISO mode on DVD decrypter but it didnt work for my two other dvds. Also some of the dvds (about 1/2) are readable in my computers dvd player but not my standalone player.

I am using verbatim DVD + discs, running on windows xp, Pentium 4 with 512 mg of ram. My burner is a TSST corp CD/DVDW TS-L532A drive.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

G'day & welcome.

1. If the DVD Decrypter ripping log says all is OK, then it's a good rip. MV removal is part of the DVD Decrypter routines (check your settings to see if it is on). Just watching it is usually not good enough.

2. Sounds like bad media. First, please read the golden rules of burning in my signature. Implement anything that needs changing, like DMA and firmware and check on MEDIA QUALITY - see my sig.

3. Please post a Nero or DVD Decrypter burning log.

Now blu, he's using verbatim's, but also a laptop? What speed is he burning at?

There are Verbatims and there are Verbatims. Even they are not immune to having inferior media codes - see here.

But yes, the drive may not be the best either and speed is always an issue. A log would come in handy.

The verbatim's are the best my supplier sells, I read your link, it looks
like the rw's are their only real problem. Do many people burn dvd's
with laptops?

There are plenty branded DataLife even with CMC dyes. Hardly fair, is it?

PS I love my Verbates DLs. They are phenomenal. I use Ritek R03 for DVD-5s.

Those are all 2/2.4x disks, a little dated. I used a lot of earlier 4x cmcmag's,
they were OK, almost equal to the ritek. The 8x/16x cmcmag's are
junk. My next order of TY 4x dvd-r's are on the way, no more tawain
for me.

taiyo or ricoh (jpn) is what i use

unfortunately ricoh(jpn) doesn't mean made in japan,
had some issues with them, but they were COF ones,
not settop playability.

yeah i have a feeling it may be crappy media - im going to try some other discs and ill let you know how it goes. Thanks for advice

These drives seem too have an issue that is spread across different makes of laptops from different manufactures, I'm having similar issue on my Clevo D900T laptop, doesn't matter what speed or make of the DVD's are, the issue is either can't close the burn disc, or the burn speed takes 30min's on 4x spd, or the burn times out and never finishes. This model is an absolute joke, never will I ever touch Samsung products again, this will be me second time too send the laptop back too fix the issue.

If trying new media doesn't help try using some new software. I have found running AnyDVD and use DVD Shrink to rip it. I have also found that saving as an ISO file then burning with NERO has given me a 98% success rate. I have only lost 2-3 DVD's since using this method and that was probably due to media since I burn at least 3 DVD's a week.

I have been using the method described by the Great one on another computer for some time and works 100% , nah this the DVD burner in the laptop is the issue not the software as I found it affects all softwares I've come across.
