Newby has Problems (yeah... like ya never heard that before)

I started burning my own DVD's several months ago, using a Benq 8X4X16 drive.
I only burned movies, and used 1click DVD copy, and DVD 43.
Recently, I began backing up my TV episode DVD's, and I needed something to allow me to edit, and split up the episodes on the disks. So, I began using DVD Shrink, and DVD decrypter.

My copies get very "choppy" in the last 30 minutes of the disk -- never in the first part of the disk -- always toward the last.
I can view the files ripped to my hard drive, and never see a problem -- thats why I thought it must be the burn.
It gets so choppy, that the show freezes for many seconds, and skips over part of it. Sometimes, the words don't match the lips. Sometimes it freezes and locks up the machine, and I must turn the power off to get out of it.

I thought my Drive was on the blink, so I bought and installed a new NEC ND-3540A drive. It did not improve my situation at all.

I found an option in DVD Shrink to burn at 2X instead of 4X, but did not help.

Yesterday, I tried to burn a couple of movies like I used to, and now, even they are screwing up!

After reviewing some threads, you knowledgable folks like to see a Nero log file so I am including one below.

The chopping/freezing/skipping are either due to bad burn, low quality media, burning too close to the edge, using stick-on labels, or dirty/dying player. Here's a guide about testing your backups.
    ====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======
    Nero API version: 6.3.1.23
    Using interface version: 6.3.1.4
You should update Nero to v6.6
    <atapi>Check supported media : Disabled (0) </atapi>
This should be enabled, the drive can't set the write strategy if it can't identify the media.<atapi>
Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)
You are burning to the edge, only recommended with first class media.

This appears to indicate an error, however I haven't been able to find any information regarding these specific Nero Error codes.

The Prassi/Veritas drivers have been reported to be a source of conflict for some people. If you can live without it, I'd suggest removing it.

      Thanks for the valuable info...

      So far:
I upgraded to Nero 6.6 as advised
I ran Nero CD-DVD Speed, and checked out a disk with the problems that I described.
Scandisk reported all green -- no errors
Disc Quality, reported a Score of 95 up until about 98% -- then it dropped to score of 92 in the last 2% of the check.

Tonight, as soon as my machine gets done defragmenting, I am going to burn another disc, and set my Target Size to 4200MB. I am going to cross my fingers and see what happens.

      Two more questions...

How do I know if it is safe to delete the "Prassi/Veritas" Drivers? What are these drivers normally used for?

Is it advised to disable my Avast Virus Protection?

      Thanks

        Hi joakers,

The disk quality score sounds excellent, anything above 90% should be no worries. It's possible that your standalone player is old/out of calibration or even just has a dirty lens. You could try a cd/dvd cleaner disk, they sell them everywhere blank media is sold for $10 or less.

Anything by Roxio will use the Prassi/Veritas drivers, I've also read some other things like some versions of WinAmp? I don't think there is a problem from having them both on the machine, necessarily, but if Nero was installed first it sometimes seems to result in a conflict. You could try finding it in Windows "Add/Remove" programs or use this tool http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/...ls/roxizap.exe to remove it.

I don't think you need to disable your Anti Virus depending on how it is set-up, obviously you wouldn't want it launching a full system scan while you are trying to burn a disk.

        good luck

I tried a new burn this evening, and it didn't freeze or lock up. However, it did start jumping around abit in the last 15 minutes of video. I'd say probably 80% better than before.
This is the latest LOG file.

You say the "Check supported media : Disabled (0)" should be enabled.
          How do you enable it?
Also, call me dumb, but what part of Nero actually burns the disc? Can I set its parameters before I run DVD Shrink, and allow Nero to burn?
          Thanks

This should be enabled, the drive can't set the write strategy if it can't identify the media.
Any clue to how to enable it?

We never found the setting for that.

cynthia, thanks for the info, sounds like we need some more detective work... hmm where is that gumshoe?

joakers, something got screwed up your NEC burner now has DMA OFF, it was on earlier.
              CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
You need to resolve that first, while I look over the rest of the new log..

Edit 1: Please uninstall InCD, even though it's a Nero product it's been known to cause problems when burning. If you want to manually control the Nero burn settings, change the DVD Shrink burn settings to "backup to ISO", then you can just drag it into Nero to burn it.

Edit 2: Are you using Windows XP SP1 with a nForce2 based mobo by any chance?

I've been all over the place and can't figure out what you are talking about "ISO" in DVD Shrink burn settings.
FOY -- I am using Windows XP Professional 2002 with Service Pack 2 , and have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.09 GHZ, 1.50GB of RAM. I am not sure what the motherboard is, my son gave it to me. I see writing on it that says its a AGP.
rbrtpl -- I followed a link to a sight for firmware from a previous message, and the firmware update for my NEC drive was submitted by someone who goes by the name of the "dangerous guys", and says that if I screw it up I may ruin the drive. Also it says I have to have a full dos prompt --not just a window. All this makes me very nervous.

                    OK...
I went to the NEC USA site, and updated my firmware. (I did not use the "dangerous guys")
Also, I removed the "Prassi/Veritas" drivers, and found out that my DVD 43 won't work without them. At this point, should I go ahead and trash my DVD 43?
I'm getting ready to burn, and I'll post a log.

Don't think the firmware screwed up your driver. I had that burner myself and I would suggest your use this version

LD3540_1W5.zip Liggy's And Dee's NEC NEC 1.W5 including Bitsetting, Riplock removed and RPC1
instead. When you unzipp the files - selct the non quiet version. That one is faster in ripping. But wait with this update until the PIO mode problem is solved.

Regarding your PIO problem. It could be that the chipset drivers are not working. Either you have Intel, Via or Nvdia chipset drivers.

An easy way to find out is to run this tool (freeware) http://www.nero.com/eng/Info_Tool.html and it will list your computer specifications (motherboard, chipset and a lot of other information). You can attach that .txt file in a post here.

Please see this FAQ this issue needs to be resolved first, nothing else matters until you get DMA enabled.
Also, you say, "If you want to manually control the Nero burn settings, change the DVD Shrink burn settings to "backup to ISO".

It's in the Target Device Tab, you want the option ISO Image File Option:

FOY -- I am using Windows XP Professional 2002 with Service Pack 2 , and have an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.09 GHZ, 1.50GB of RAM. I am not sure what the motherboard is, my son gave it to me. I see writing on it that says its a AGP.
It is likely a nForce2 mobo, if so, you absolutely should update the mainboard drivers to version 2.45 or newer. These can be found at nvidia.com or your mobo manuf. website. I'm not gonna get into the firmware thing, but I'd trust cynthia's advice absolutely
                        Edit:

Yes I'd get rid of it, I haven't seen a Region 1 dvd that dvddecrypter couldn't handle on it's own yet.

                          OK...
Cynthia: Where do you get: "LD3540_1W5.zip Liggy's And Dee's NEC NEC 1.W5 including Bitsetting, Riplock removed and RPC1"?
Also, I used "info tool" as you suggested, but it is too large of a file to post here.
The following is what it turned up for Configuration
                          Hardware Information
                          --------------------
                          CPU : ?
                          Bus Speed : ?
                          Motherboard : ?
                          System : ?
                          BIOS : ?
                          Memory : 1535 MB
                          Sound : Realtek AC97 Audio
                          Video : RADEON 9200 Secondary

I'm Still lost -- how do I found out what kind of chipset I have? What kind of Motherboard I have. I've been in the bios and everything.

Taelon: I removed DVD 43, now I know why I couldn't find this ISO thingy -- because I had it set up to default to Nero -- that option isn't shown, in that mode.
Still trying to figure out what chipset I have??
                          Thanks

That info isn't very encouraging lol, The bios will tell, you write down the number at the bottom of the screen. See this page http://www.wimsbios.com/numbers.shtml
