AVI to play in dvd player?

I have alot of AVI movies that I would liek to put onto DVD discs so I can play them in my dvd player at home, what is the best format to burn them in? So a dvd player will recognize it?

Any help greatly appreciated!

use a program such as 'tmpgenc' to encode to mpeg-2 format. then use 'tmpgenc dvd author' to prepare it for burning. use nero in 'dvd video' mode to burn.

this is the method i use for those types of files.

1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI/MPG/wmv etc. to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc") to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)


**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress

in case you got a player that can playback avi/mpeg4 you wont have to convert anything at all

you can get these players for very little money so it might matter how many titles you want to burn to dvd

using mpeg-2 with tmpeg you will hardly be able to put 4 titles in decent quality to a dvd

using mpeg-4/avi, however, you may store 6 titles on a media

Nero Vision Express is also a nice quick way of doing it.

If you have alot of avi's as you state above I would seriously consider getting one of the divx/mpeg4 dvd players. they can be had for app $50 or less and save alot of time converting, authoring etc. If you still want to convert the avi's get Gspot or avicodec ( both free) and look at the video info of the avi/s. If the resolution is close to vcd/mpeg1 you would gain nothing quality wise by encoding to full D1 resolution. However you would use alot more space by encoding to full D1. You could also encode to 1/2 D1 (352x480/576 and save alot of space. You have to use more bitrate at a higher resolution which makes larger files but doesn't neccessarily increase the video quality if you are using a lower resolution to start with.

Well, try Nero. www.nero.com get a free trial there. Another great program for video editing that can also burn to a DVD is Ulead Video Studio. www.ulead.com get a free trial there. I use that program a lot and highly reccomend it for video editing (I made 2 music videos with it) and it can burn DVDs and Video CD's as well.
