16x or 8X...does it matter?

i have a plextor Px716a ... I have used verbatim 16X and 8X blanks...but they seem to burn at the same speed... Am I not setting something up right? Or should i just stick to the cheaper 8x?

Stick with the 8x blanks, my theory is they are the exact same if not
better than newer 16x, production has increased, and with verbatim and even TY quality is slipping. Not much but if the 8x are cheaper.
Burn no faster than 8x tho, after scanning a burn you will see more errors
towards the end of the burn when 16x burning is reached.

Yes, 8x is fine (despite what some say), have not tried 16x, but I know that 8x discs are getting rarer and rarer at my local computer store. So 16x discs work fine, just don't burn that fast.

That's why I only burn at 8x with the LG, surf and burn.

LG? I use 8x on my Memorex +R's and it works flawlessly. I use 4x on those cr@ppy Philips discs because 8x causes write errors (CHEAP!!)

LG makes what some consider to be the fastest quality burners. The problem
is, it doesn't support verifying that quality with error reporting.

Hi to all, I'm a new member, but I have some experience in DVD burnings.

My experience is that slow is not always better.

With nowdays media, the best thing is to burn near the certified speed.

For example, a 16x certified media is better burned @16 or @12; max @8x, but burn @4x or @2x a 16x certified media give almost always bad results.

Obviously great importance have the combination of burner/media/firmware.

Plextor Px716a is one of the best burners, and is able to do very good 16x burnings with many media. The best media are Taiyo Yuden, but also Verbatim media give great results.

That's accepted with most of the geeks over at cdfreaks, my testing
sort of confirms, but 8x burns are always as good and usually better
than 16x burns on optimized hardware and grade aaa media.
However I have just had a few close calls with qualifying a burn for the hall
of fame, you can't apply their standards with the average dvd burner/user.
Some of those guys have 8-9 burners/readers in their boxes.

Sorry for my mistake: I don't meant to apply the standards of CDFreaks here. Plextor 716a can burn with very good quality almost all media, also @16x. Until now the best results are obtained burning @12x.

What I want to say is that between 8x and 16 there is a great difference, and actually does it matter, mostly for 16x certified media.
