Same Brand, but the Quality WOW

I just wanted to throw out this bit of info I found when I bought some DvD-R media the other day. I buy the brand WinData from a local store and usually buy the +R type. Checking them in DvDDecrypter shows me that they are made by Yuden. Woo Hoo score one because they are $15 usd for 50 and have even been on sale for $10 usd. Now the bad news, I decided to buy the same brand but get the -R. Why should they be different, I thought. I put one in Decrypter and holy cow...... ....... they come up as UME100!! I was shocked. I guess it just goes to show that even though the brand is the same it does not guarentee that the quality is the same. Now I have completed 4 or 5 projects successfully, but I think I will use these on smaller projects with low compression and lower the target output a bit.

vw56german, you have to be careful buying media now a days. Stick with ty's or verbatim and you won't go wrong.

I bought 150 of those WinData's on vw and tael reference, I received the
disks and indeed they are yuden MID's, however burns and scans did not
confirm as did the MADE IN HONG KONG,
looking up the parent company revealed they were TY clones. They
had 3-4 times the error rate of genuine made in japan TY's.
Since then I have bought verbs and TY's just as cheap.

there are many ty fakes so be careful not to simply judge by the media id

make sure the quality actually lives up to the name

Stick with ty's or verbatim and you won't go wrong

In europe verbatim is distributing media manufacturered by Moser Baer in India. Quality has been reported to vary from bad to excellent.

cmc and prodisk make verbs in tawain, my mit is as good as or better than TY. at least more consistent than MIJ yuden/sony

We are reasonably lucky here - especially if you can get a good supplier. Verbs are verbs and not CMCs. TDKs (except the el cheapos which are CMCs) are real TDKs.

I can vouch for MB quality, havent had a problem till now, one lot was bad, which they replaced.

Even HP media is now manufactured by MB.
