Help With Sony DRX-800UL Burner Problem

    Howdy,

Received a new Sony DRX-800UL external drive for xmas as my old Sony DRU-510A was starting to konk out. So I uninstalled my old Nero and installed the new Nero V 6.6.0.14 and started backing up around 10 or 15 of my discs that my old burner would not recognize any more. I hadn't had a chance to watch any of the backups and didn't think anything of it as the old burner burned flawlessly. So when my daughter came home from university and watched 3 of the backed up movies and they all started freezing an hour or so into the movie........ So I updated the firmware from KYO4 to KYO6 from the sony download section, backed up the flawed disc again with DVDShrink and burned another copy using the new burner with the same end result. It started freezing at pretty much exactly the same point. So I ran that point of the movie using the same files in DVDShrink preview window and it played flawlessly so I figured that DVDShrink wasn't the culprit. So I then burned another disc with the same files using my old DRU-510A and watched prior to the point of where the initial discs were freezing and it played flawlessly right through to the end..... I'm using the firewire connection and in Nero Burning Rom it sees the burner as a DRU-800A which is the sister internal version of the external burner I have. I'm not sure what else to check or do The new burner is burning the media at 4x as that's the max for the media I have right now because that's all the old burner can handle. Is there anything else I should look into? Just an extra note, Device manager shows the new drive as a Sony iLINK DRIVE IEEE 1394 SBP2 DEVICE so that all looks okay to me. My box is a 1.7G w/ 768M SDRam which should be sufficient. The only thing I can say different about the two is that the new burner seems to burn the 4X discs faster than the old burner although I can't say that for sure. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Max

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

    1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

    2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/show...threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Just wondering what these responses are referring to? I've seen both of them in a search and I don't think they address the problem I have at all. What it boils down to is my old burner produced a backup perfectly while my new drive makes the backup freeze using same files, same media, same burning software and same procedure..........The above information would be relevant if I could not burn a satisfactory backup, but that's not the case. Can't tell from the above post if I'm supposed to post a log of the burn file or something....... but If that's the case then here it is and thanks for the help

there's a whole lot of clues in these logs, does your computer have usb2?

that burn was with the firewire? onboard or pci card?

Yes I have USB2, just thought that firewire was more stable. Not sure about the Firewire status, but I bought the card and plugged into the motherboard from a slot in the back of the box. What are you seeing?

does the drive have usb2 capability, it might pay to check that out
as I don't trust some firewire drivers
Firewire is better, but your card might be in the wrong slot.

everything esle in the log checks out ok, with the possible exception
                of the

Yes, you can run either USB2 or Firewire. Maybe I'll do a switcheroo and run the same test again and see if there's any improvement. As far as the firwire card, I've been using it now for probably 3 years to capture all my digital video from my camcorder and it seems to have worked just fine.........just another tidbit if info.

                  Thanks for the help,
