My DVD burner may be slowing down my computer...

I bought my computer in Nov. 05'. It is an HP with a 3700+ AMD Athlon 64 Processor, 1 G memory and 200G hd. I use my HP DVD writer 740b a lot.

I was using Sonic to make copies of disks. But I needed more features so I installed Nero. After that my DVD's were playing real choppy. I thought there might be a driver conflict so I uninstalled Sonic. It did not fix the problem. Then when I went to start burning DVD's they were buring extremely slow (1 - 2 hrs). But they play fine in other DVD players.

Since I installed the Nero, when I am burning a DVD the entire computer slows down, like it does not have the resources to do anything else. This did not happen with the Sonic software. But my DVD player started going out at the same time I switched programs so I am thinking it is the DVD player and not the software. But I am not sure.

    Thanks...

    Hello,
Do you have both software programs installed?
It is possible they may be conflicting with each other.
try uninstall the other one and just run nero see if that helps.

Yes I did uninstall the Sonic software and my entire computer still is slow while trying to read or burn a DVD. Also, the read/buring time is extremely slow, but it was not when I was using the Sonic. Like I said, DVDs are playing choppy as well and I have used the drive to play and burn DVD's a lot since I have bought the computer 2 months ago. Thanks..

I would think that the burner would not be going out with just 2 months of use. What version of Nero do you have installed?

Also do you run any anti virus solfware while backing up movies I have noticed that The new Norton messes with backing up movies so I shut it down when I am doing a movie.

You know, I would not think so either, even with the amount of usage I have put on it. I am using Nero 6 Ultra Edition.

Also, if my DVD burner is in fact going out, would that be the cause of these problems, or are the strictly software related?

I looked up the firmware updates and my drive was not listed.

                    Here is an other possible:

can you post a nero log? The log may show whats going on.

Also are you using the same brand of blank media?

I disabled the Norton and spysweeper and the computer is still running slow but not as slow as before. Let me try the other link you posted and I will let you know what happens.

DMA is enabled. The disabling of the protection helped speed the computer usage up a little but it is still burning slow so far. Thanks.

here is how to post a nero log:

Log it is located in C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero the file is NeroHistory.log

The last burn is down at the bottom, to be safe remove your nero serial number before posting the log.

Also do you have a lot of programs running in the back ground.
                              To check this;
                              Go to start
                              Click Run
then type in msconfig then click ok
then click the start up tab
there will be a list of all programs with a check box in front anything that is checked is running in the background. If there are a lot you may want to uncheck the programs you do not need running at all times. Be careful with this though you do not want to uncheck anything that says system.
