Benq makes burner, phillips in a contract agreement sells to dell, firmware and support gets lost in transition. You get the short end of the stick.

choices of firmware for benq 1640

choice of firmware for dell ZERO

crossflash is when you decide you have no better option and you tell the dell/phillips
    burner it is a benq!

The idea of "These pages are only for advanced users. Bad flashing could destroy your drive definitively. Read carefully the installation notes of your firmware before you upgrade." makes me a little concerned, me being something of a non-advanced user.

I will admit right up front here, I have never had to crossflash. I have flashed twice since we got our first PC in August 2005. I know a little more now but what I knew then wouldn't be enough to fill a Smartie or M&M. Both times I flashed from safe mode with Spyware disabled & following the instructions to the letter. This is only my experience, only you can make the decision. Of course if you go for it you probably won't breathe until you see that okay sign.

            1. option one, throw drive away
            2. hunt for media that works
            3. make the drive into something it should have been
and don't buy another drive that's not supported with good firmware upgrades

            eg, dell, sony, hp, phillips

would you buy a mercedes from yugo?

How about some user friendly advice on how to crossflash. Does anyone know how best to do this? Thanks.

First off, thanks so much for the input on my issue, it's very nice to see a forum respond to newbie's, and it's much appreciated. I took the advice of this post and crossflashed my philips 8701 to a BenQ 1640, and I was able to burn Tuscan Sun successfully, I'll keep my fingers crossed on further success.

soul, and others, how to crossflash philips burner? (hopefully this will come up in people's searches): check out this post.

                      chachi,
Way to go, you went straight to the source, that where I went to learn.
It wasn't that hard was it? You took a 10$ problem and turned it into one of the best burner/scanners ever made! You can't get a 1640 any more.

Once I had the steps, it was a breeze, I just wanted to ensure that I knew what those steps were, rather than haphazardly trying to do it myself.
