Burn the entire 4.7G

Hello,

I am a very new user to burning DVD's in fact I have had a DVD burner since Nov 2004 and never used it, it came with the computer and never got arround to use it.

My question is how come the DVD media states that its 4.7G but when I try to burn a DVD my software tells me that only arround 4488MB are available, so I am confused what happenes to the other 272MB?

WOW I amnot sure how to explain that well but you never get all of the gig scace that you have, just like and a 80 gig hard drive actually gives you 74.5 gigs to use same thing with media.

I am sure someone else can explain that better.

It's a marketing trick. It's really 4.37Gb = 4,700,000,000 bytes (give or take a few). So the marketers say it's 4.7GB (note the upper case B), meaning 4.7 billion bytes, when in computer speak, it's this amount divided by 1024 cubed. This equates to 4488Mb (for a -R blank).

The tech(reactor) way of stating this is ..........

.......that the manufacturers quote the capacity of a writable DVD disc in decimal (base 10) rather than binary (base 2) notation so a 4.7 GB disc stores 4.7 billion bytes [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1000 = 4,700,000 KB ÷ 1000 = 4,700 MB ÷ 1000 = 4.7 GB] . Expressed in binary notation the same disc has a capacity of roughly 4.38 GB [4:700,000,000 bytes ÷ 1024 = 4,589,844 KB ÷ 1024 = 4,482.27 MB ÷ 1024 = 4.38 GB] .

I really apreciate your replies, the reason for my question was that I was trying to back up my current DVD movies but they did not fit on a 4.7GB disk because they were much larger, since then I have tried Nero and DVDShrink and both work great in making the files fit into a reqular blank DVD-R

By the way isn't it 4.7 billion bits? or is it 4.7 billion bytes?
