Yup my OEM drive had OLD S****Y firmware. My old firmware was like GBAC or something. The new firmware works well. 16x burn on Verbatim +R media with a 96 quality score!!!

Where do I get it, and what is so special about it. Most people I know bleed Verbatim. I've personally had really good luck with Verbatim. Ritek = teh suXXor unless at 4x, then I wonder how long they will last.

Is this a good burn? I overburned one of my 8x Verbatims @ 12x.

                  Very good scan

I suggest you to be aware: some verbatim branded media are not good: take a look on the box, and if you see "Pearl White" don't buy them. If I remember correctly these are actually Ritek media.

I'm going to be buying from a new place next time anyhow. Prolly TY media of some kind, 8x most likely. I think it should give some good results from what I've already seen in error scans.

I confirm this. There are already available taiyo yuden 16x discs, but results are not so good as 8x media. This is due to firmware issues, because these media are more recent than most of firmwares. With time 16x taiyo will be reliable as 8x ones

The 1640 and 55 are geared to do just as well with -R's.
Stick to premium media and it won't let you down. My uncle gave me soem old packs of Plextor 4x's +R's he had stored. Oversped to 8x and pulled a 98. Gotta love MIJ media!

I take what Nero says is a bad burn with a grain of salt. I had a 58 yesterday with some Fuji media, watched the movie and it played flawlessly.

A good player can read also heavily damaged discs. I suggest you to keep a copy of this disc on your HD and to check this disc later in time (4-6 months) to see if is still readable.
