    It Worked

I just checked out the DVD and it looks OK. I tried to run a file from it and it worked fine. It took about 10 min to burn at 8x which is probably about right. In case anyone has the same problem the firmware update I installed was 832S.VS0M.stock.rar from the Firmware Site.

Sorry if I soundedlike I expected to burn at 16x, I was just trying to get back the 8x.

So by using the other firmware you got it working that is good to know. Glad it worked out for you.

Old firmware didn't recognize the media so it burned at slowest speed, the new firmware saw it and burned at it's max speed 8x.

          Usually goes backward

That is why I why surprised. Usually you can move back and it didn't make sense that it would lose only some speed. I thought that if it were just media then it should have rejected it completely and not allow me to record on it at all. Allthough the way things are moving today, who would know for sure.
