Guys, thanks for all your inputs. ok, here's the dope. I am using Philips 8X DVD+R media. I have updated the firmware, as well as installed the latest Nero patch. I am using an extenal DVD writer connected through a USB 1.1 hub. I am not sure how to display the Media ID. Also, I did follow the instructions to turn on the DMA, and it seems it was already enabled. The only thing that I did not try was to burn at 4x speed, which I shall try once I get back home from work. Meantime, any more clues? Again, thanks for yr help here.

dhar, you will need to go buy a usb2 card that's compatible with your
laptop and get rid of those TTP drivers, that's why nero can't see your media
Phillips is not generally considered quality media, once long ago and far away.
simple math, usb1 is like .66x dvd burningComment

I am using Philips 8X DVD+R media.
I would definately reduce your speed to 4X with those discs. But I could be wrong...

It's a media issue but more so what Chewy said - you can't flow enough data out of a 1.1 port quickly enough.
Put your drive on an internal IDE channel and buy good media like Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims.
