So that's the DW1640-55 but what about the new DW1670 or the EW164B? I wished I knew these things before I bought my DQ60. It may yet to be my backup burner,so nothing was lost.
Here's looking for an honest opinion which Benq does everyone feel is better?

I just ran into a thread where that was discussed and another nighttrain
          was involved,

I think all three were good drives, kind depends upon luck of the draw

If I'm not wrong, the 1670 is not a genuine benq, but a rebranded TEAC. But I'm not sure of this.

My suggestions for a good benq drive are 1650 and 1655 (almost the same hardware, but 55 have lightscribe)

Too bad I can't afford a new burner

In my list there are pioneer 111 and benq 1650/55

Looking at the specs between 1650 and 1655, the only major difference I see is the lightscribe capability. Is that a correct assumption, and is there a drawback to having that abilty in ones drive?

No drawback. You can have it and never use. Writing quality between two drives is pretty the same.
