    Plextor external drive, help pls!

Using a Plextor usb drive. I have written one disk using a disk copier.

I have not been able to use nero, or dvd ccs free, or image burn.

with image burn it runs until the line says "writing settings" and then stops.
can you use DMA with an exteral USB drive? perhaps because a popup asked if I wanted DMA and I said yes? Do I need to reload the drivers?

I copied from the drive ok with dvdshrink, then converted to an image ok. but am still unable to burn. it is not encoded or protected.

I think it must be something simple that I am not seeing???

    Thanks for any info.
    Jeff.

Also, at what speed are you burning? I have the external Plextor 716-UF on a firewire connection. I believe there is something in the manual that if you're using USB that you shouldn't burn faster than 2x. Also, I assume you're using USB 2.0? If your Plextor can use Firewire you may want to go to the store and get an internal Firewire card.

      Regards,
      Cam

I used slow settings, but it seems to not even attempt. reads the disk info, attempts to apply the settings to the drive, and then stops. I'll try again when I get home and post the log.

windows xp shouldn't need any drivers, did you mean burning software?

does nero info tool give you a full report with a blank disk inserted?

no, I even erased with all the fixes found from the shrink faq and used the older version also. nero 6.6.0.18 I think. I open nero, and cannot access the older menu type, only a newer fancy one. and when I try to copy or burn to disk, it just shrinks to an icon in the lower right and does nothing. If I try the same again, it just locks up.

I tried nero info, it located the first optical drive of three and then locked up.
