I looked up the current firmware that is installed in your drive (HP DVD Writer 740b) and firmware version HI24 is the newest. This is what HP says they fixed with HI24.
Notice how many times they use the word "Improves" instead of FIX ;(

I'll poke around a bit and see if I can find ya a crossflash for that HP oem drive.
coincidence? no, I think HP's/LG's dropped the ball here.
Yep it looks that way. I did find that with a little clever flashing you can take the HP740b crossflash it to a GSA-4166b then cross flash it again to a HP840b which does write OK. I would only do that on my own drive thou and be prepared to buy a new one.
that's about the least documented crossflash I have ever googled, chas and karang might make it work, my benq, liteon and nec's were much more documented
