Whats the real difference between good media and cheap media?

With out a lot of technical terms the real difference between good and bad media is :

Cheap , bad media seems great at first but 6 months down the road as the discs begin to deteriorate, they can no longer be re copied and or played.

I am now left with over 100 dvd back ups that some play some dont and the ones that do play can not be recopied.

I would strongly recomened staying away from Princo discs.

Some of the old discs have become so bad that they cant even be tested by Nero Cd/dvd speed for quality.

Yet when they were first burned they were great and played awesome now 1 year later........ they are nothing but coasters.

Some older burns I have been able to save and reburn many many other cant do anything with.

Word to the wise... buy only good media saving money now wont help you later.

you can use your princo and lend to your friends or family so they will not have the real copy because it will die in .... tick tick tick file is gone

OMG I wish I would known this back then there are many many back ups that are nothing but coasters now.

WOW real eye opener! I will only use TY from now on.

I have been spending most of my time now going over older burns burned on princo's and I decied to check out my Lost season 1 out of 7 discs I was able to save 3 of them the other 4 couldnt be ripped to reburn on better media. Will have to start from scratch.

Some were worse then others and they were all backed up on the same day. Some are still OK and some are gone!

buy a big hardrive then copy as much as you can from your princo ( the one that is not dead yet then use it on TY )

you can clean dvd real good and use your 50 to rip it with dvdd ( set speed to low you may get some that your dvd rom can't read )

            @night,
How do I set the speed in DVDD lower to be able to read some of these that are going bad?

I am wondering if they can be saved?

that's why my LG is my most prized drive

use dvdd to rip at a lower speed(like 4x) settings read speed device

if just one vob won't copy then rerip that one at 1x

              reboot after changing read speeds

I am assuming that is the best reader?

What would you recomend for just a DVD-ROm for reading, I am worried about running 2 burners.

In DVD cases for some and a cd case that holds 260 cd/dvd's in a leather case away from sun, heat , or cold.

Just starting checking older burns and found that some of them no longer work. I am sure its a matter of time and non of those princo's will work.

I am sure glad that when I first learned to back up my dvd's that the cheapest I could get at that time were Verbatims 4X-R those are my oldest and they still play!

As time went by I got a good deal one day at comp USA and when I used them they all played great so I thought I got a good deal.

I wish I never would have now. And I sure wont again.

I had no problems with all kinds of media till I started scanning old burns and found just a couple that wouldn't play all the way thru on my newer toshiba.

I had way too many tyg01 and tyg02 and decided to copy new disks on the fly at 4x, about 1 in 3 of the iffy mid codes wouldn't and I ripped them to the hard drive, about 1/2 of those wouldn't rip in an nec drive and I used my LG.

In over 100 disks I reburned only one wouldn't be saved. I did skip titles I didn't care about. My worst mistake was using a 200$ plex to burn 4x media at 8x. This was only possible on dvd+r blanks, My 4x dvd-r's were mostly burned on an old pioneer 105 and they are ok, some great after 3 years.

I thought the cheap discs were doing good too then and they all played back then. I do have some princos even older then the ones I have posted that are still OK, its like its hit or miss with them. With Lost there are 7 discs 2 of them wont play anymore and cant be backed up again, cant be ripped.

The Chronicals of Narnia was not as old as lost and that one turned to junk now to. The funny part of that one is the movie plays on PS2 but nothing else and it too can not be ripped.

So I started testing my oldest burns on the old verbatims and they all still work, play and are rippable.

                          A lesson learned indeed.

clean the bad disks and set dvdd to a slow read speed and test in your benq

eyeglass cleaner and an old clean linen handkerchief

it's almost as good a ripper as my lg

I have tryed that already more then a few time its no use for the 2 lost back ups and the Narnia back up.

I have tried DVDD all the way down to 1X with no luck.

When I look at the discs very closely I see no scrates or bumps or dust or anything BUT I do see some patches of disscoloration all over the discs.

The only way to explain it is it looks like a pair of blue jeans after spilling some bleach on them.

The cleaner I have been using is the eye wear lens cleaner from the eye wear care kit from sam's club. and used ultra soft lens cloths.

they are clean just no good.

I tryed to rip with my sony and my benq no go.

I tryed to rip with ripit4me, DVDD, shrink, and ya even DVDfab no go.
