dvd-rw problem

Have a question please. Have a toshiba d-vr4xsu recorder, when i tried to record onto a sony dvd-rw ver1.1, the recorder said i had to initialize it. When i let it initialize the disc and hit record nothing happened. Took the disc out, put it back in and the machine said incorrect disc. is this me or the machine?

It may not like that kind of disc, check your user manual to see what media is compatable with the machine.
